Exactly. Imagine if they took this as a chance to reset and create an amazing arts, culture, history museum on an appropriate site with appropriate funding - as per the original vision. We can dream

and it's not like they haven't had time to get out right, this has been going on since 2017

Great news for Traditional Owners who always said it was the wrong site, NTG will be happy not to spend money on culture, Feds don't need to stump up for a diminished project certain to have cost overruns. But $15m spent, all for nothing, due to political expediency.

What’s this? Yet more research concluding that robust public investment in the arts yields economic benefits?

A great outcome for Ireland, and a rebuke to all those tired cliches about freeloading artists sapping the resources of the state.

But also, art enriches us all, economic benefits or no.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Everytime I come across Ian Fairweather's story I'm just
Screenshot of the AGNSW artist bio for abstract painter Ian Fairweather:

"A turning point in Fairweather’s life and work occurred in 1952 when he undertook a sixteen-day journey by raft from Darwin to Roti, Indonesia, during which he nearly perished. Held by Indonesian authorities for three months, he was deported to Singapore and then to England, where he dug ditches to raise money to return to Australia, settling on Bribie Island off the coast of Queensland.

On Bribie Island Fairweather built a thatched hut and, living as a hermit, continued to paint until his death in 1974, producing some of the most significant works of his idiosyncratic career."

It's been a good week. Nothing big, just small good things. Making pizzas with the kids. Kindness from others. Watching the whales go by 💙

Jeez good there are still nice people in the world. Fingers crossed it is an easy fix

Urf what a pain. Hope you weren't too far from town when that happened, and that a mechanic can get you back on the road soon

Madeline Pfull, The Twist I, 2024 ❤️📚

Madeline Pfull's The Twist I is a cartoonish, exagerrated painting of a middle aged woman in an embroidered jacket smoking a cigarette and reading an Agatha Christie novel

Ah that's interesting thanks Michelle, you're right. Looks like launched in 2016 with s&s as partners. And 2024 was the first global anthology

I do remember seeing that anthology in Big W. Maybe it does get sales??

I'm not sure what to make of The Hope Prize. Run by Simon & Shuster, 100% of royalties from the anthology are donated to charity... but how do they calculate their own royalties? Would it not have been more transparent to just commit a percentage of the (very steep!) $30 entry fee??
Our 2025 Charity Partner is CAMFED — The Hope Prize
The Hope Prize is a global short story prize that connects great storytelling with real-world impact. Shortlisted stories are published in an anthology by Simon & Schuster Australia, with royalties do...

it's probably not good for us but in my defence I often genuinely can't tell the difference between a form rejection from a nice journal and actual tiered responses. Makes my little brain implode

The decision to place a head in front of a museum also feels very very different to the full figure he did for Times Square
