I really think the safest way to understand this (and arguably the most accurate, given all the low-engagement voters now fleeing from him) is that he's one of the most gifted con men in American history, and a number of attention-based institutions stood to gain from his return to the spotlight.

Indeed, but with a big dose of pseudopolitics plopped down on it. Phonics is so "uncreative," so mechanistic, so rote. It's just that it works.

It's also disconcerting that the bad theory makes a much better "story" of how we read, and feels more wholesome at a gut level. It just happens to be unambiguously wrong.
