Why do speciation rates vary across the tree of life?
Some of the best yet most underappreciated places for this investigation are natural hybrid zones.
This preprint takes you to the hybrid zones in the origin of species to find a clue. 👉 shorturl.at/N7FXE

The Trump administration wants to repeal the Roadless Rule which would open up nearly 50 million acres of national forests to disastrous logging and destroy the habitat of over 50 endangered species. Submit a comment now to protect them. https://on.nrdc.org/4lTDsxN

Our country’s most wild places, including 7 forests in AZ, are under attack as Trump targets tries to repeal the Roadless Rule.

Join me in telling this Administration that our forests aren't up for grabs! Make your voices heard to @forestservice.bsky.social ⬇️

Forests are at risk: 70% of the Earth’s remaining forests are within 1 km of a forest edge. Rolling back the wilderness protection rules would further erode the integrity of the forest ecosystems. There are only 16 days left to speak up...

Don't let them destroy our last wild forests.

Did you know that the Trump administration is threatening protections for nearly 60 million acres of our wildest forests?

We can't let this happen. Send a comment to the US Forest Service telling them that our forests need the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

The Roadless Rule has protected roadless forests since 2001, keeping them free from logging, road-building, and other industrial development.

Now the Trump administration wants to strip protections from 45 million of those acres.

The Roadless Rule does a huge amount to protect wild areas against wildfires, the vast majority of which begin near roads. It's super easy to leave a comment urging them to keep the Roadless Rule and protect against fires. Comments like this make a big impact! www.regulations.gov/commenton/FS...

The Roadless Rule is under threat! Today, the USDA opened a 21-day comment period on its plan to rollback protections for nearly one third of America’s National Forest land, including 8,700 climbing routes, 768 miles of whitewater paddling runs, and 25,000 miles of trail.
Roadless Rule Under Threat: Speak Up for 45 Million Acres of National Forests — Outdoor Alliance
Nearly 45 million acres of backcountry forests are at risk. Before September 19, tell the USDA to keep these landscapes protected.

The refined Endosymbiotic Speciation Rate Models are better supported by the data with much lower AICs (Table 2). When considering mito & nuclear effects explicitly, the Snowball Effect emerged. The effect sizes of mtDNA & nDNA significantly deviated from the null distributions. #evolution

To account for the independent & interactive effects of mitochondrial & nuclear substitutions on the selection against hybrid DNA, we propose to refine the three speciation rate models into the Endosymbiotic Speciation Rate Models to have Kn and Km explicitly. #speciation #evolution

Such distinct demographic and evolutionary processes in mitochondrial and nuclear genomes have significant consequences for the origin of species boundaries, which we have discussed in a recent review. #speciation #genomics #evolution onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

On a fun side note, we found an intriguing difference in mitochondrial and nuclear cline widths, with nuclear clines wider than mitochondrial clines. For animal populations, mtDNA often has a smaller Ne, but a greater mutation rate & purifying selection than nDNA. #genetics #evolution

With quality-filtered data, we calculated selection against the hybrids with dispersal & cline width, mitonuclear genetic distance between the parental lineages we conducted model selection. The Slowdown Effect is best supported by the data with an effect size of ~3.5. #speciation
siluwang.bsky.social
Only a subset of the organismal systems had independent estimates of dispersal & generation time, which urgently call for more organismal life history studies before #biodiversity loss. Also, notice the geographic gap in hybrid zone studies in biodiverse areas in tropical rainforests.
siluwang.bsky.social
With the 330 hybrid zones, we extracted data for selection against hybrids (S) & genetic distance between parental lineages (K). For S, we extracted genetic cline width and dispersal. We extracted the generation time to unify the units KM/sqrt(gen) for all dispersal estimates. #biogeography

Hybrid zones are precious arenas for estimating the tension of gene flow and genetic incompatibility underlying the evolution of reproductive isolation at nascent species boundaries. Here we bring you a World Map of Animal Hybrid Zones. #hybridization #speciation #Evolution
siluwang.bsky.social
The modern population genetic characterization of reproductive isolation as diminishing gene flow between diverging lineages effectively captures the speciation continuum. Hybrid zones are precious for inferring the formation of species boundaries in the face of gene flow.
siluwang.bsky.social
To test the alternative speciation rate models, we need to reliably and independently estimate reproductive isolation (S) and genetic distance (K) between hybridizing species pairs in the early stage of speciation. #speciation #evolution
