I've been really divided because the Soldier table's story was really compelling, well-paced, bit of let's play. But also I really like the schemer characters and want to spend more time with them.

(I know, I know, this is basically a stock-phrase from the Marx / Foucault nexus but it's still true.)

As with most incorrect stuff on Wikipedia the culprit is using a journalist in place of a reliable source.

and how they subsequently concocted bizarre excuses why he didn't react as they expected.

This is to say that we knew these guys were fucking shit ages back. It's just been very hard to get anyone to do anything about it.

Ethics should be grounded in the materiality of the situation and not made into a game of improbable what-ifs.

Anyway, morally alarming hypotheticals have no real correlation to real-world actions. Situation governs ethics and situation exists in a real world where there is no trolley switch and where there is no veil of ignorance.

And there is no moral recovery from that. By the logic she sets forth in this paper, the only moral act would be to shut down ever data center in the world permanently.

Also, here's a pointed question for this deeply unserious person:

If an offset of carbon in one place is not something that can morally correct a carbon dump in another then she is personally, as an employee of Anthropic, culpable for every single person who dies from data center pollution.

The two rivers analogy assumes discretion between the polluted river and the cleaned river and points out that polluting the first is not offset by cleaning the second. *BUT IN OUR CASE IT'S ALL THE SAME "RIVER"*

They bring up the "butterfly effect" analogy early in the paper. But the really important thing about this analogy is that it situates all actions in a single, large, complex system. The butterfly and the hurricane are impactful upon each other *because they are not discrete*.
