I'm working on a Star Trek thing and I think I just wrote something that really hit me in the gut as I started writing about Jadzia Dax.
Jadzia Dax was the first time I saw my future. Not a spectacle, not a joke, not a body framed for someone else’s pleasure, but a whole person—confident, brilliant, laughing, living. She was the first time I saw a trans woman who had already made it to the other side of becoming. She had walked through the fire of transformation, emerged whole, and existed in her fullness—not despite it, but because of it. And then she died. I think that’s why it hurt so much. As a trans person, I don’t get to see myself old. Think of a trans person—really think. Do you ever picture us with wrinkles, with time carved into our skin, our hands shaking from age, our voices softened not by dysphoria, but by years? We are always young, or we are dead. We are stories cut short, names spoken in past tense, obituaries wrapped in tragedy. And Jadzia was my first glimpse of something beyond that—of a trans woman who had already arrived. And then, just like that, she was gone. But then she wasn’t. Her life, her story, her self—handed to someone younger. Ezri. The next generation. The cycle continues. The queer community can never truly be killed, because we will always return, we will always rise, as long as there are people - there will be queer people who follow their own heart. It is beautiful. It is necessary. But I would like—just once—to get old. To stay for a little while longer. To see my own future stretch beyond another rebirth and get to see other begin their journey as I end mine. To live long enough to prosper.
