For sure, I see physical ttrpg books as sort of a luxury product. If I just wanted the rules I could buy or pirate a pdf, but I pay extra to get the books themselves because they're nice.

For me, it does what I would want DnD to do, but better.
The lack of classes might put someone off, but it has enough customization to make up for it. Though if you don't like the extra added risk of death in combat it might not be for you.

There's a free version on drivethrurpg if you want a look.

It has fewer classes, they aren't all largely focused around combat, and it isn't balanced around X combat encounters per day.
Skills use 2d6 so it's a bell curve, making skill choice matter more.
Lower hp overall, weapons deal damage on a miss making combat faster. Fewer, more powerful spells.

I like Worlds Without Number, it's like DnD but with less bullshit and death is more of a threat.
