I'm always down for curiousity's sake, I'm gonna keep playing with the traditional route of shaders on meshes for now just cause i want to try a variety of things. grass is super important to get right for me, i dont know why LOL i love sneaking around it in in games like TLOU

I grabbed terrain 3d so i'm gonna mess with that too cause i think it used meshinstance3d's and youre supposed to be able to get thousands of those w/out issues

oh thats looks fucking great! i'm guessing all the objects in scene are able to move the grass around like a shader would normally?? I wonder if maybe my plane was just too big and i should've subdivided a much smaller plane many times and then use more planes to fill it all out

just a noise texture really, sub divide your plan a ton, add the shader in there with the noise and then do the vertex.y += noise texture.r . I used a color ramp as well to try to get it more black and white so its like blades of grass. Nothing fancy at all. I wanted clumps of various sizes though
