Is the "publish or perish" culture at the center of the troubles we're experiencing in scientific publishing? Or is it actually because of the growing corporate greed of the big publishers?

What do you think #AcademicSky?

‘Publish or perish’ culture blamed for reproducibility crisis
Survey of more than 1,600 biomedical researchers also flagged small sample sizes and cherry-picking of data as leading causes of reproducibility problems.

1. Did you know that Girl Scouts has, for a long time, accepted trans girls and nonbinary scouts?

Trans kids are under attack. Every year, I make a thread of trans and nonbinary girl scouts you can get your cookies from.

Lets get our cookies from them this year in solidarity!

Dear academics

We could dramatically reduce our administrative workload if we all just agreed not to ask for reference letters until we made our list of finalists.

This is massive collective action problem has already been solved by…

…every other industry on earth.

Who is for abolishing grad app letters of rec at the point of application? Would it be so bad if letters were requested AFTER candidates were shortlisted? If we do this at UCSD who will join us?

It is definitely a hard endeavor! Erin Buchanan and I are working on a paper rn that defines BTS. We started with a version of it called Who BTS (it’s available on Osf) where we arbitrarily define it.. so now we are testing our definition.

Thanks! This is one of the closest I’ve found but I haven’t found any looking at the morality/personality aspects of the research accused of doing QRPs.

Also, shoutout to @juliabottesini.com @mijke.bsky.social and @simine.com for a stellar paper.
slewis5920.bsky.social
All right #psychsky… who knows of papers looking at how researchers taking part in QRPs are perceived? So far, I’ve found some stellar one on researchers views on QRPs…

Social psych studies are getting crazy again.
This time, instead of ridiculous conclusions, they are written with 10 studies, 60,000 people, and written in so complicated a way that it is nearly impossible to figure out what is happening from one study to the next.
