Word of the Year: Obligation

Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one

@ronjohnsonwi.bsky.social and Glenn Grotham need to pay attention to the voters.
@aoc.bsky.social: "You have a right to see your elected member of Congress... Our job is to hear from people. And if you aren't doing town halls because your own residents and members of your community are upset with what you're doing, the answer is you’ve got to own your decisions."

@pronounced-ing.bsky.social is quickly becoming my favorite resistance fighter.

Thank you, Celeste, for your books, your courage, and your encouragement to take action.
In occupied France, people would drop their used matches folded into a V, as a secret sign of resistance. People who opposed the Nazis would see them, knew they weren't alone, & felt emboldened to take action.

Some modern day equivalents here--small but powerful actions you can absolutely do:
Thirty lonely but beautiful actions you can take right now which probably won't magically catalyze a mass movement against Trump but that are still wildly important
Why? Because others will see you do them, and it will make it easier for them to take their own (slightly less lonely but equally beautiful) action by your side

Kindness matters.

Be kind to yourself first, and then to others.

Graphs that explain why you and everyone you know are exhausted.

To be in the top 1% an individual has to have $11.6 mn in networth.

To be in the top 50%, the net worth is $585,000.

My net worth is barely above negative. I'm doing good compared to my friends & family.

This is why everything cost so much and you have to work so much. Because enough doesn't exist for them.

In light of Trump II’s first 18 days of mayhem — including his and Musk’s coup against our system of government — many are asking: “What can I do now?”

Here’s a revised and expanded list, in rough order of importance.

Is calling alone enough? NO, where the fuck did I say it was? (I didn't.) But for folks who are frozen, a small action--like calling--helps break the ice. And that makes way for much more. Are you out there setting things on fire? I hope so! But right now I'm just trying to thaw out whoever I can.

Call senators and house reps needs to be something I commit to in 2025, even with a rep like RoJo
you can CALL TODAY to tell your senators to VOTE NO on RFK Jr, who says he’ll end all research into infectious diseases for “a little break” of 8 years

the hearings today were NOT final.

@hcrichardson.bsky.social & @rbreich.bsky.social are my daily reads on Substack. I hope they find new platforms.

Sigh.
I'm going to send messages to all the people I subscribe to at Substack, telling them why I'm cancelling. I encourage you to do the same.

Update: I call bullshit. This was a test run to see if they could get away with starving people.

Its also part of the attention diversion, emotional waste land, to drain us.

Removing access to food -- regardless of how temporary -- is cruel.

So much for the "pro-life" voters.
WIC. They are pausing WIC.

That's the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Last time I checked (a while ago), every dollar spent on WIC produced over a dollar in savings *in the same fiscal year.* For most people, though, feeding infants and mothers is enough.
Broader agreement that it to applies to discretionary spending payments (Head Start, WIC, etc).

I often wondered what vote suppression looks like when one isnt a white, cis female. The Hartmann Report shows how voter suppression is built into the system, along with its acceleration in the 2024 campaign. I'm disgusted how the voices of BIPOC are eliminated

Feels shocking, but also expected.
The Trump administration has required that all communications and social media posts from federal agencies undergo prior approval before being shared. This directive is currently in effect until the end of the month.

That last bit is so important....do not comply in advance.
These executive orders on banning federally funded entities from recognizing trans people or disallowing them from using the bathroom are not self-executing or immediately enforceable. They require formal rule making at a minimum. They are a scare tactic. Ignore and do not comply in advance.

According to this list, I need an hourly rate of $41 per hour ($84,511 / 2080, assuming paid holidays and other time off)

The $7.25 minimum wage is a feature designed into the system to keep lining the pockets of 817 people.
