truly this is a masterful, thorough portrait of a culture of toxic masculinity producing immature men who gradually escalate to full-fledged emotional abuse and domestic violence and it is just wild to me that this novel isn't better known

I was underselling how much alcohol abuse and social pressure to drink is a huge theme of this plot. There's an entire subplot revolving in part around a group of dissolute men trying to force their alcoholic friend to relapse!! In 1848!

ahh we are veterans at this by now! three seasons of waking up at 7am on Saturdays for Street Dance of China, sooo many Weibo and Tencent nights with the tailgating starting at 2am local time, waking up at 6am to watch new eps of Longest Promise or The Double when they drop before work, on and on 😅

ahh and there's the gaslighting. Anne Bronte is so good at depicting what it's like to be manipulated and toyed with by someone you're in love with, and also so good at capturing the thoughtless entitlement of men towards women and the eggshells on which women walk to avoid giving them false ideas
