Tuesday's TGT marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen. Discuss her writing and adaptations and continued influence today. Or discuss whether students were aware of who the lady was on their tenners.

Tuesday 16th December Today marks 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen in 1775. She was the seventh of eight children born to Rev George Austen and his wife Cassandra. George was the rector at the village church in Steventon, Hampshire where Jane was born. Jane and her only sister (she had 6 brothers) were briefly sent to a boarding school, but largely were educated by their father who encouraged them to read widely. He also bought both girls expensive paper and writing materials. Jane wrote prolifically, mostly for her family and had written several novels before she was 22 years old, though her first novel Sense & Sensibility wasn’t published until 1811 when she was 35, though even then it was published anonymously ‘By A Lady’. Despite publishing just 4 novels in her lifetime and 3 more posthumously, she is considered one of the most influential authors in English history. Her stories were pioneering in their portrayal of strong women trying to find love and independence within strict rules and formal social expectation. Her influence today can be seen in shows like Bridgerton which mimic her gossip and romance filled social dramas, and direct adaptations of all her novels. She was also chosen in 2017 to be the figure on the new £10 note. Have you read any Austen or seen any adaptations of her writing?
