This is 10-12 tenure-track assistant professors’ salaries at many places. A whole academic program’s worth of money, pissed away, In Times of Austerity, on rent-a-cops going after students who dared speak. Nobody behind this should have a career.
The University of Michigan spent $800,000 hiring private investigators--one of whom FAKED A DISABILITY--to surveil anti-genocide protesting students. I'm speechless.

if we want people to believe that journalism is important, and obviously it is, we need our biggest journalistic institutions to stop paying handsome salaries to bigoted dilettantes

"Now, this, this is the way to defeat an autocrat: flocking behaviour. Rutgers University Senate has called for the Big 10 academic institutions to create a joint defence fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack."
Do no sleepwalk into autocracy. Keeping your head down will not save you. Instead, your institution—school, nonprofit, church—needs to do what Rutgers is: flocking behaviour. Band together. Be solid. Face reality—together. It does work. And there's no other choice than to sleepwalk into the horror.
Now this, this is the way to defeat an autocrat
So many of us are sleepwalking into autocracy. Here's how to defeat an autocrat—flocking behaviour. It works. It works a lot better than keeping your head down.

This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

Just feels like we’ve lost something that was quintessentially American, and something that was a largely shared civic virtue. We’ve debased ourselves in a way that is just truly tragic and maddening.

Le trumpisme, à l'instar de l'hitlérisme, est un culte de mort, une détestation de tout ce qui vit.

The health secretary has suggested allowing the virus to spread, so as to identify birds that may be immune. Such an experiment would be disastrous, scientists say.

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

Why are little boutique shops only open until 5pm on weekdays? Brother, I'm working. That's how I get the money to buy your stuff. Why don't you take the day off and I'll see you at 6pm when I become a consumer again.
