It seems Labour have now learnt the word 'racism', but this is utterly disingenuous given how they are pandering to Reform’s far-right agenda.

Labour can't out-Reform Reform – it needs to change tact
The Labour Party can't out-Reform Reform, and if it genuinely wants to choose ‘decency’ over ‘division’, it needs to change tact.

True true! Sadly, all the ones I listed are in humanitarian stories about migration in the UK I've researched.

No criminal record, then volunteer, then learn the language and, ideally, bring an Oscar or an Olympic medal. Then we'll accept you - maybe you'll get citizenship...

Labour looking at Reform's racist policies and saying "we"ll have some of that". These aren't just discriminatory, by making migrants meet higher standards than the average person, they automatically treat migrants as if they are criminals on community service.

Under the proposals, legal migrants will have to learn English to a high standard, have a clean criminal record and volunteer in their community to be granted permanent settlement status.

Labour Party Conference kicks off tomorrow, so we thought we'd mark the occasion by going through some of the Prime Minister Keir Starmer's recent social media posts on the Government's #immigration policies. 👉 buff.ly/MshzSHQ

To Starmer’s Government: Your #WordsMatter.
Keir Starmer is complicit in stoking anti-migrant racism
Disclaimer: we had to edit this piece multiple times because the PM kept making more anti-migrant statements

i hope this article gives hope to any teachers who are confronted with ideologies of the 'word gap' in their schools. despite the stubbornness of this deficit concept, there are always spaces for resistance 💕 ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

At the last 'Approaches to Language, Migration&Identity' conference, I discussed how we can go beyond the positive migrant 'storytelling canon'. Project Armonia is a great initiative supporting displaced people through food/cooking (and not linear storytelling)

A great article! Thanks for reviving it and sharing!

Absolutely! They know it says racism but popularise it by (re)claiming it says England i.e. the narrative is 'we should separate patriotism from racism (that they are two different things)'. And that's how it becomes successful and normalised. The shocking part is how the government plays dumb :(

Family unity is central to recovery, integration, and wellbeing. We stand with @rasvoice.bsky.social in urging the Home Secretary to recognise the human cost of this policy and to reinstate safe, legal, and timely pathways for families to be reunited.

UK's family reunion route is already a farce which sees too many people denied ability to reach UK to seek asylum, including children.

Tightening it will only ensure even more, particularly women and children, are denied safety, and more families ripped apart. #r4todau

Can't wait to read it! Are you presenting it at all in one of your future events? I see there's one in Nottingham in November and I'd like to bring my daughter (year 4) who loves your poems (she was in the Y3 Rosen' class at school last year :)

We're proud to join over 200 organisations to call on Party Leaders to end the divisive politics, racist rhetoric and demonising language of the past.

Only then will they bring unity instead of division and cohesion rather than hate.

As the UK government begins detaining people under its “one in, one out” policy, our Racial Justice researchers are on the ground, speaking with people who could be subject to this inhumane policy next.

What we’re witnessing is fear, uncertainty and cruelty.
