Dear John Clare grieving the losses from the hedges and fields that he loved.

1824: Took a walk in the fields saw an old wood stile taken away from a favourite spot which it had occupied all my life the posts were overgrown with Ivy & it seemd so akin to nature & the spot where it stood as tho it had taken it on lease for an undisturbd existance it hurt me to see it was...

How was she?

I think my driving playlist needs some Patti. I shall remedy it anon. ‘Because the Night’ or ‘Gloria’?

Absolutely adore this beautiful thistle vase by the French artist Eugène Feuillâtre, a famous enameler of the Art Nouveau period who was head of the Renée Lalique workshops & also worked for Tiffany & co. @joaokay.bluesky.social loves this period, knew his work & saw this vase recently.

painted lady

#Photography #Butterfly #Ohio
A Painted Lady perches on a white/pink/yellow bloom alongside a green tuft of spade-shaped leaves. The underside of its facing wing is crammed with detail--segmented and saturated, like a cel of animation or a tattoo. Brown and white, orange and black, lacy webs, disk-like eyes--nature's design in full aesthetic flower.

Outside the hotel window in Montalcino, there’s a noisy taverna. Every night, around 11 o’clock they blast out AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. This annoys me. Until about the third ‘Wo ho a-ho Ho’ … and then I remember that I love Thunderstruck. ⚡️ 🌩️

Today’s favourite piece of Tuscany art.

The Uffizi still lingering from last week, & the chance to see Hugo van der Goes and his triptych ‘The Adoration of the Shepherds’. I read about this in Bart van Loos’ excellent book ‘The Burgundians’. Incredible & rich (and full of the ubiquitous patrons).

Had to get up early to move the car from the free car park. Still, sunrise ….

It might come down to an ice cream penalty shoot out. :-)

That definitely sounds intriguing, K. Is it happening at Napier and will it be online?

I think Tuscany doesn’t allow you to take a bad photograph. :-)

Today’s favourite piece of Tuscany art.

To Siena for the very first time and other than the glorious cathedral, there was Duccio’s ‘Maestà’. The central panel shimmered.

And how it would have looked in totality.

Simon Schama wrote a magnificent book on Rembrandt and called it ‘Rembrandt’s Eyes’. You can see why. So close to the dying of the light; still so alive.

I did and I exclaimed ‘Ouch!’

Loved Cellini’s Perseus too.

Today’s favourite piece of Tuscany art.

From the Uffizi vaults. My favourite painter and ‘The Rabbi’. It appeared in the final room I visited. And with it, Rembrandt sends art off in a direction leading towards the modern. Controversial, but Rembrandt has more in common with Picasso than Raphael.

Sun setting and the full moon rising over the Tuscan hills. I love the hints of autumn here, and the sun warm but with no sting. Good job, as I left my hat in the post office.

Well, that’s a reason to visit Spring in Winter! 😅

I love the other Botticellis I’ve seen … including the one at the National Gallery in London … but this felt like something else … magical, otherworldly, yet strangely closer to home and identifiable.

Anyway, night all! I’m off to hang out with three diaphanous Graces in an orange grove!
