Mamdani: "We can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves. After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him."

They supported apartheid in South Africa as the manifestation of a “natural” racial hierarchy. They adored Franco-Spain as a model of white Christian patriarchal order. They hailed Mussolini for his “reactionary modernism” and his manliness.

Such a long tradition on the Right of supporting foreign autocrats and longingly admiring rightwing regimes in other countries

It has always been a way for American rightwing intellectuals and politicians to affirm and communicate their preferred vision of societal order at home and abroad.
i am currently reading jacob heilbrunn’s great book on the American right’s love affair with foreign dictators, and one thing that is very apparent is that these people have always celebrated racism. no backlash required.

NEW! The Trump administration appears to have sent a married father with NO CRIMINAL RECORD in any country to rot in a prison in El Salvador because of a PAPERWORK ERROR.

This man doesn’t even have tattoos! But his paperwork has two different peoples’ ID numbers listed and the wrong last name!

The path to authoritarianism starts with "they're all corrupt," "they all lie to you," and "everything is a scam." It lets you pass off feeble-mindedness as sophistication and substitute objectivity for subjectivity. Liberal democracy requires that certain things be true and certain things be moral.

No Dem Senator has to follow Schumer here. This is a weak stategic move driven by fear and learned helplessness. Don't follow him. He's leading the party into irrelevance and helping Trump and Musk in the process.

Call your Dem Senators and ask them not to join Schumer's surrender tomorrow.
SCHUMER just now: "While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse."

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

Donald Trump is the most unpopular president at the start of his term in modern American political history.

Don't let anyone talk to you about a mandate.

Don't let anyone talk to you about there being support for his agenda.

Don't let anyone tell you that anything about this presidency is normal.
