Hi all, I'm a linguist, interactional linguist, and apparently now also a forensic linguist. I'm currently a postdoc at the University of Agder (Norway) as part of a project on police interviewing, but I also work on grammar in interaction, sometimes even a bit of prosody, and anything about Danish!

You can't convince me that these are the real names of the authors of this study. Harder & Kock (1976) isn't real.

From around late July 2025, Urban Dictionary no longer shows an upvote/downvote count. Nobody knows why. It might just be a bug, or it may have been intentional.

The missing counts make the site unusable for slang researchers like me :-(
Screenshot from Urban Dictionary definition for "Urban Dictionary Likes and Dislikes"

They removed it because this website is now run by idiotic cunts apparently
User1: Why can't I see the Urban Dictionary Likes and Dislikes?
User2: Yeah what's up with the website, is it a bug?
User3: No, this website has just gone to shit
User1 and User2: Aw fuck that sucks, now it's unusable

Are you teaching prescriptivism this year? If so, please consider introducing your students to YourWrong.co.uk. It could form part of a seminar activity or prep! I'd also be very happy to provide some corpus examples for a small analysis task. Just get in touch!

Casual reminder that the Tocharian B adjective meaning 'bad, evil' is yolo.

Emic and etic, maybe...

Bonus points if texts are in Norwegian/another scandinavian language

Do you know any good texts/quotes on conceptualizations of "language" or other notions somewhat related to #linguistics? Or any other kind of ideas/material to inspire teaching a class about Conversation Analysis/Interactional Linguistics in a "language theory" course #emca 🐦🐦

The alternate spelling of the #Danish verb otherwise spelt 'squak, whine' was added to the orthograpic dictionary last year. This better reflects common pronunciation. I'm not sure there are other =[w] words that have both spellings? 🐦🐦

First article of my PhD is published!

It examines how midwives raise the topic of violence in antenatal care. Using CA of 35 consultations, we show that asking about violence involves subtle, interactional work - not just delivering a question.

I don't know why these pictures don't work... I hope I have not been flagged for possibly sharing inappropriate material...

Now that the article about "fuck" is finished, I need to remove this post-it used to track the status of the project 😢 It has received weird looks by various office visitors...
Photo of a wall, where a picture of a photo of a steamroller with the text "review" hangs. A post-it with just the text "fuck" hangs around the middle of the picture. There are other post-its at the edge of the photo.

The article was automatically added to ResearchGate (being Open Access I guess), but it thinks we're citing a German article called "When did church organs find their introduction in Württemberg?"... I think it's been mixed up with out article about "fanden" (the devil), which isn't recognized.
