Received a Political Science and History degree 20 years ago from Southwestern; haven't used it except to yell at the tv. Houstonian, also a genealogy nerd. Mainly sending missives to the void. My opinions are my own (nobody else wants them).

I will grant that we haven't gotten to that point (yet) in this debacle of a regime, but I feel that I should point out that hungry people revolt. It didn't turn out well for the Bourbons or the Romanovs. Just in general, it's a bad idea to give already desperate people one more reason.

Okay, who had "worst damage to the White House since the British/Canadians burned the place in 1814" (not counting renovations that were duly appropriated with historical preservation in mind) on their bingo card?

I mean, I live in Houston and City Council renamed our big airport after GHW Bush back in *checks Wikipedia* 1997, and it's still Intercontinental or IAH to me. And that was done legally, not by someone just proclaiming it.
I'll start calling it "The Gulf of America" as soon as I start calling Twitter "X".

I'm wondering if there are any enterprising DAs in Maryland and/or Virginia willing to prosecute obvious cybercriminal activity if Elon or any of his stooges happen to wander into their jurisdiction (e.g. federal annex buildings, any of the three major DC area airports)

And in another episode of "my poli sci degree from 2005 is obsolete", we were constantly taught that people with power would hold on to it, even if their fellow travelers were threatening to take it away. That checks and balances would hold because of Congressional obstinance.

The decision to pardon violent insurrectionists couldn't possibly come back to bite us, right? Anyway, welcome to the effective legalization of right-wing political violence, at least as long as it's done in a federal jurisdiction.

The hot takes on Biden's farewell address are really something else ("why didn't he do that himself???" being the main one).
All of the things that he said need to be worked on were things that required Congressional (and sometimes state through the Constitutional amendment process) approval. 1/

If you're completely, 100% proud of history, then what you're learning is not history. People and societies are messy, complicated, often very morally wrong. Even if you are comfortable with the trends and outcomes of what they built, there are a lot of misdeeds and skeletons paved over. 1/

Random sports rant: very little pisses me off in sports more than TEN (NFL) trotting out Oilers gear against HOU. No other team, as far as I know, has done this: move, change team names but keep name's rights, flip off the former city by wearing that name's gear against the successor.

Classless.

Missive to the void for today: everyone else has an opinion on what went wrong, what the Democratic Party can do to be better, and win next time. I'm no different, and I don't think anything I'm saying is unique or even all that rare. But since I can put it out there, I will. 1/

My one hot (lukewarm at this point) take from yesterday's South Korean martial law declaration/attempted self-coup by their president: a large faction of the president's party in their National Assembly stood up to him. I don't see enough of the Congressional GOP ever having half of that courage.

I've been thinking about ways to describe the main political parties in the US, and I've decided that the Democratic Party is 3-5 raccoons in a trench coat. But I had an idea on what the Repubs are, and tbf it's probably not too far off from what the original author was going for in his allegory 1/

If 8 years ago hadn't happened, I'd ask if we were being punked. The cabinet picks so far are a pro-disease HHS secretary, an accused child molester as AG, and a Homeland Security secretary who can be trusted to resist an invasion of innocent puppies and isn't from a border we're worried about

Well, that's that. PA being called for Trump basically means it's over.
November 6, 2024 at 7:06 AM
Well, not looking good for Senate control, as MSNBC projects Sherrod Brown of OH losing. Jon Tester of MT down, but most of the cities haven't reported anything yet.

The good news and bad news in GA is that most of the outstanding vote is in Democratic areas. The bad news is that the margin may be too high.
November 6, 2024 at 4:07 AM
I know it seems obvious, but looking at maps and seeing massive swaths of red, you have to remember that land doesn't vote. In PA, for instance, most of the vote is going to be in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and the suburbs thereof, and it takes more time to get them reported.
November 6, 2024 at 3:16 AM
I hate to say it, and would love to be wrong here, but I'm not seeing Allred picking up 650,000 on Cruz with the locations of the outstanding votes.

NV polls closing imminently, though MSNBC was showing lines (in Washoe County) that won't be anywhere close to done by closing time. It'll probably be a minute for them to count there.
November 6, 2024 at 2:58 AM
I don't see it on the map I'm looking at, but MSNBC projects Alsobrooks to win the Senate race in MD. Maddow specifically said they won't call it yet.

Large number to start reporting at the top of the hour. Mostly will be exactly what we think, but MI, IA, AZ, WI coming in (and the Mountain Time Zone counties of TX).
November 6, 2024 at 1:58 AM
Early vote in for Harris County (Houston, TX) - a few worrisome local races; we're down in a lot of judicial races and not up enough to overcome the surrounding counties for the appeals courts.
