Absolutely wild pink nitrogen ribbon aurora burst last night here in Iceland. There was cloud cover, and I was worried the show would stay shrouded. Voila!

The purpley-pink & white ribbons are much closer to us in the atmosphere than standard green arcs, and are fast moving.

Sunset Solstice over Stonehenge apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25122...
Many cultures mark yesterday's date as a change of seasons -- from autumn to winter in Earth's Northern Hemisphere. The featured image was taken just before the longest night of the 2025 northern year at Stonehenge.

Solstice on a Spinning Earth apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25122...
Can you tell that today is a solstice by the tilt of the Earth? Yes. At a solstice, the Earth's terminator -- the dividing line between night and day -- is tilted the most.

Wow, the solar wind is really cooking at 700+ km/s. Combine this with some south Bz (hopefully it sustains), and mid-latitude aurora is possible tonight with potentially impressive displays at high-latitudes!

A historic decision.

All EU member states — without exception — have agreed to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that while consensus exists, some countries will continue pushing to maximize their own guarantees.👇

This was my first aurora capture of 2025, early morning on Jan 1. I'm wondering how many auroras I have left this year.

Tonight's a possibility to add another.

Someone needs to tell Speaker Johnson that Trump is not his boss. He doesn't have to stay at work later than him.

My God this particular Congress is weaker than any in the country's history.

Used to be that Presidents begged the Speaker to get their agenda on the floor.

The Wall of Light

The Flat Earthers are wrong.
At the Edge of the World, there's no sudden drop, or barrier of Ice.

There's the Wall. Pulsating, Twisting. Blinding.
Heaven help the Mortal who dares approach, for there is no return.
