VCs don’t run universities.

We do.

After another real terms pay cut, UCU is launching a UK-wide strike ballot.

Ballot opens October.

Vote YES.

While accounts of platform power tend to come across as bleak and monolithic, "Algorithms of Resistance" shows through a diverse range of case studies how people can resist algorithms across various domains. This book is available in a free, #openaccess edition: mitpress.mit.edu/978026254742...

Walter Rodney's ambitious masterwork of political economy, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa is part of our Black History Month sale.

Rodney makes the unflinching case that African maldevelopment is not a natural feature, but a direct product of imperial extraction.

I'm giving a short talk in a few weeks with my new team about our work where we want the Amplification Project to go, or think it could/should go. It's a weekday morning on campus but come along if you can, we'd love to hear from you.

Save the School of Music protest. It's a very bittersweet feeling watching these incredible musicians play. This is the talent we will be losing if Cardiff University go ahead with their shortsighted plans.

@lendavis.bsky.social , author of "Poor Things," talks with the @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social about how people with money write about those without it.

Cover of Poor Things: How Those with Money Depict Those without It by Lennard J. Davis. Cover features a halftone illustration of an adult hand dropping a coin into the outstretched palm of a child. A color filter overlays the image; most of the image is blue-tone, but the hands are encircled in bright red. The text “Poor Things” is in white chunky lettering.

my chapter on the #analysis of #EDM #DJ-sets 🎧 🔊 🔍 in the #Oxford #Handbook of Electronic Dance Music is out! thanks to the #OUP team and the editors @lmgm.bsky.social and @robinjames.bsky.social for their feedback and support! ❤️ doi.org/10.1093/oxfo...

Abstract

This chapter presents a methodological framework for analyzing EDM DJ sets. The concept of “phonographies,” introduced by Alexander G. Weheliye, is used to discuss DJing as a socio-aesthetic practice of modernity, originating from Black and African American culture. Rolf Großmann’s concept of “phonographic work(ing)” is employed to further illuminate the material foundations and practices of DJing. The chapter discusses Mark J. Butler’s three elements of a DJ performance, namely “tracks,” “third record,” and “DJ set,” and distinguishes between third records as transition and third records as entity. Additionally, three fundamental aesthetic principles are introduced: modulation, repetition, and combination. This analytical framework is then applied to analyze a house DJ set by Solomun and an EDM pop DJ set by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, revealing distinctive aesthetic approaches across EDM genres in terms of sonic time and space, liveness, authority, and the creation of third records.
Keywords: DJ sets, analysis, third record, sonic space, EDM pop, house, liveness, phonographic work
