Paul Graham on Sam Altman - "Sam Altman has it. You could parachute him into an island full of cannibals and come back in 5 years and he'd be the king. If you're Sam Altman, you don't have to be profitable to convey to investors that you'll succeed with or without them. (He wasn't, and he did.)"
Altman has been quite clear about his strategy.

From the 2008 crash he learned that if you bind enough of the economy to your business you can do whatever you like; government will decide the rules no longer apply.

What he's selling is unaccountabilty.
I honestly don’t get the value of this company. They hoover up energy and water. Their product constantly gets things wrong and, in extreme cases, coaches people into suicide.

And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft.

What does OpenAI offer the world?

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

I expect tomorrow they’ll start trying to deport Mamdani, arrest Democrats for voter fraud, make loud noises about the shutdown, and brutally arrest some more immigrants. It’s all a pro wrestling match for them. (Not for us.)

Oh yeah me too .. and I live on the other side of the planet.
I'll be honest, I'm not even sure who the mayor is of my own city, but I am very invested in this mayoral election 3k miles away from me. 👀

Saved for the moment I suppose, though I don't know how the proportions went (ranked voting, so not seeing numbers being reported .. yet?). Congrats to Mamdani and best wishes for success during his term.
It is unthinkable that NYC might succumb to fascism - to me it is like a touchstone. If NYC falls or even if the mayoral race ends up anywhere in the vicinity of Cuomo giving competition - the US falls in my eyes. Not that anybody cares, but I'll be saddened by that.

So this crab jumped into our build system and things got out of hand.

End result: a brand new, super fast ReScript build system.

Wat? ... from the global south.
Here in Atlanta yesterday, more than 2,000 people waited in their cars—one woman for 14 hours—for a box of food. The giveaway ended early; there wasn't enough to go around.

Multiply this scene by countless others across the country, and you get a sense of how crushing the desperation is right now.

When I saw these turn up at an #Chennai MRTS station, brain automatically played Also Sprach Zarathustra. But seriously these stones look expensive for their function. Wonder how the choice gets made. At least it is not of the kind that will prevent people from lying down on it if they need to.

What can a German studies and gender studies professor have to say about tech and thinking? Quite a bit! Well-written and insightful, with a bit of SV "inside baseball" thrown in. The quotes at the bottom of this page are surprisingly accurate. #BookReview

12y: It is so much easier to find out simple general knowledge information from people rather than websites. Go to any website & you simply can't find it. (Kid searching around for Israel Palestine conflict and things like "colonization").

Cruel me: Take the time to read instead of playing Roblox.

Just watched this last night and it was really cool and captivating. Loved all parts of it, the cast, the visual tone, scripting, the time it is set in.
Thinking about "The Vast of Night" again and how this movie still doesn't have a proper physical release. An entrancing and beautiful movie marred by being stuck in streaming compression jail.
