A procedural vote on the "One Big Beautiful Bill" in the House (vote on the "rule" for the bill, a necessary step to open debate and eventually vote on the bill.) 217 was needed to pass. It was 207 - 216. It has been left open in the hope they can get some Rep votes back. Hoping they stand strong.

Relevant History: The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883 established the first comprehensive merit-based civil service system in the US.
It was intended to do away with "The Spoils System" whereby unqualified people got govt jobs for their political loyalty, a bad system we've returned to.
