Surely 'passed away' rather than just 'passed' is the standard British euphemism, and 'passed' is a recent Americanism (our language has gotten a lot more Americanized in recent years)? I would like to be able to say "he took his exam today and he passed" without people thinking "Oh, that's so sad!"
