As a little birthday present to myself, I created my Substack "Incrementally Better". The first edition on why the EU AI Act is not truly risk-based (and more) is now live:

This is actually not a bad tool, but the devil is of course in the detail - so please engage a lawyer and don't just rely on the tool!

This book still haunts me. Read it for a rather absolutely thrilling but rather bleak vision of the future of humanity.

I just finished 'Blindsight' by Peter Watts. Wow. Highly recommended. A captivating story about contact with an alien race. The book discusses consciousness, human connection, and the implications of modifying brains to keep up with AI (amongst other things).

According to Gavi's Annual Progress Report, Gavi-supported vaccines saved a record-breaking 1.7 million lives in 2024!

That's 400,000 more than in 2023.

Fair question. Don't know about my siblings but I certainly had a lower tax rate back in Switzerland. I love it here in the UK, but trains are certainly not the reason for it 😂

This is an interesting debate about AI stories between an OpenAI researcher who works on AI writing and one of the greatest living short story writers.

Now that we have machines that can write novel stories, and increasingly very good or moving stories, we need to think more about what that means.

Small sample basis but literally every time I venture into central London there are train problems.

Compare and contrast with my siblings commuting in Switzerland. Only one train cancellation in one year... when they were in London visiting me 🤦

Amazing thread on the Arctic
mikeachim.bsky.social
I recently learned something amazing about the Arctic - & my tiny mind is blown.

Like many folk, I've always believed it's a featureless, empty place. Which is true! But this week I learned what's underneath it - & if THAT was on dry land, it'd be a wonder of the modern world.

Buckle up!

The beauty of soft lines, of meandering lines...

#photography #landscapephotography #landscape #travel #nature #naturephotography #bluesky #sunrise #sunset
There is an infinite beauty to moving water, waiting to be discovered! The purple of a winter evening's twilight is softly reflected in the fast moving waters of the St. Lawrence River, Montreal, Canada. Ripples of sand on the top crest of a coastal dune in Namibia catch the last light of day, while wind blown sand further down glows golden as it is lifted into the light. A harmonious interplay of lines, shape, textures and tones, as the first light of day touches the ridge lines of a coastal dune. It was mesmerizing to see how the scene transformed as the light crept into the shadows. For a short lived moment, the soft light of the morning sun draws beautiful, dreamy bands of satin across the tips of these otherwise inconspicuous dunes in Namibia's mesmerizing Sossusvlei region.

bird

#photography #BlackAndWhitePhotography #StreetPhotography #ClassicMono #EastCoastKin #Lumix
Black and white photograph featuring a vast, dramatic sky with scattered cumulus clouds taking up the majority of the frame. A strong diagonal line across the lower portion of the image is formed by the silhouette of a stone bridge, creating a high-contrast division between the light sky and the dark foreground. A small bird, also rendered in complete silhouette, is perched near the center-right of the wall, slightly breaking the horizon line. The light appears bright and slightly hazy, suggesting a sunny day with high dynamic range.
