I do hope that the dozen or so consumptive people in the hall don’t have to suffer too much longer, and that the tosser whose mobile phone went off in the quiet closing bars of the final movement is able to have it surgically removed tonight (presuming that is where the people around him shoved it)

An evening with my daughter at the Barbican to hear Sakari Oramo conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Mahler 9. It was quite something

Yep, this is a must-read:

“AI isn't going to wake up, become superintelligent and turn you into paperclips – but rich people with AI investor psychosis are almost certainly going to make you much, much poorer”

I very much recommend reading the ever wise Cory Doctrow's very clear explanation about why A.I. is a bubble and it's about to pop.

"AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations." 🔌💡

Screenshot from Corey's article which features a one hundred trillion dollar note from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe altered to including a glowing red lens and a drawing of Sam Altman's face. Below it is the title of the post "The real (economic) AI apocalypse is night"

The Telegraph today made the case for King Charles’ subtle diplomacy in advancing Ukraine’s interests (although I wouldn’t rule out Kate exerting some influence too, from the look on Trump’s stupid face)

Most of my students think it's okay to use for "brainstorming" and "generating ideas." Once again: GENERATING IDEAS IS THE ENTIRE POINT OF YOU

“I use it for brainstorming.” is quickly becoming my most hated pro-AI statement.

YOU TOOK YOUR BRAIN OUT OF THE EQUATION. THAT IS NOT BRAINSTORMING.

I wonder if any country has ever invoked Article 5 and, if so, which NATO member it was.

Bessent on why US troops won't get involved in defending Europe: "As I told my European counterparts about two weeks ago, 'All I hear from you is that Putin wants to march into Warsaw. The one thing I'm sure of is that Putin isn't marching into Boston.'"

It’s also desperately unfair on the students, who find themselves in a strange land, without the basic tools they need to cope with their classes, while working to earn money (to send home?).

They may not be the authors of their predicament, just as they may not have authored ‘their’ assignments

Dmitri Shostakovich was born on this day in 1906. In this fascinating article, Stephen Johnson asks, what does Shostakovich’s music mean for us today?

‘If universities are not already alive to this reality, they need to wake up. Every forged medical letter that passes unchecked, every essay or thesis written by a ghostwriter … undermines the credibility of the institution and the degree it awards.’

Now think about what it’s doing to our children that some teachers are relying on it to develop lesson plans that no one is fact- or bias-checking.

The article echoes what I’ve seen and heard from peers: AI makes it easy to produce slick but shallow work that looks plausible on the surface, yet riddled with errors or bad assumptions underneath.

Your coworkers end up having to fix or redo it.

It’s workslop, and it’s spreading fast.
AI-Generated “Workslop” Is Destroying Productivity
Despite a surge in generative AI use across workplaces, most companies are seeing little measurable ROI. One possible reason is because AI tools are being used to produce “workslop”—content that appea...

The transcript of Trump's UN speech is wild. "All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle. If the First Lady wasn't in great shape, she would've fallen. But she's in great shape." www.rev.com/transcripts/...
