Virginia State Senate Dems just brought down fire and fury regarding the “Compact,” notifying the President and Rector that UVA would lose ALL STATE APPROPRIATIONS if it signs and cedes the University to “federal political control.” Notably, their letter directly restates points made here by @siva.

The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.

I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk

Love this new report on buildings' relative fire safety from @alexhrwtz.bsky.social and Pew colleagues.

To add to this thread, with the annual National Economic Accounts update released recently we got our 1st estimates of real data center construction

It's tripled since 2022, reaching $25B/yr. Keep in mind this doesn't include investment in computers within, which have risen by $100B

I fear if things don’t change right now, this image is going to come back to haunt us
Laura Rodriguez, on Twitter:

A federal agent points a weapon at a woman who was recording them.

Jess, a U.S. citizen and member of a neighborhood patrol team that documents and shares ICE activity across the city, was filming when the incident occurred earlier today in the Berwyn area.

Solidarity with Mark ✊

Far-right harassment of academics has long been a problem across countries. Many legacy media ignore, minimize, or even facilitate it. #NoPaseran

I’ve received multiple death threats + doxing (including my home address) directly following harassment from Turning Point USA, Jack Posobiec, Andy NGO, + Fox News which called me an antifa ‘financier.’

I have been forced to move my classes online.

Another confirmation of the "everyone is twelve now" theory.
Patrick Cosmos @veryimportant.lawyer:
working on a new unified theory of american reality i'm calling "everyone is twelve now"

"I'm strong and want to have like fifty kids and a farm" of course you do. You're twelve. "I don't want to eat vegetables I think steak and French fries is the only meal" hell yeah homie you're twelve. "Maybe if there's crime we should just send the army" bless your heart my twelve year old buddy

That's a ton of "both" or "I don't know" for those issues near the top, which is not surprising because the Democrats' agenda, as the party not in power, is naturally less visible to the public, especially in a non-election year. Tough to draw conclusions from the red-blue differential alone.

we need a word for a type of person who spends all their time working to live in a city so they can be near cool things, but they don't actually like going out

The Nobel Prize for medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi.

Interestingly, none of them seem to be part of the huge network of Nobel Prize winners.

At least none of their PhD supervisors seem to have won the Nobel.
The 2025 NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.” A screenshot of a chart published in Nature that shows that 702 out of 736 Nobel Prize winners are part of the same academic network. Only 32 researchers out of this network have won the Nobel Prize in science and economics.

I grew up without cable. If it was on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, I knew OF it but I too never saw more than 4 or 5 full episodes of anything originating there.

We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.

Nonetheless, since you're mentioning the third thing as if it sidesteps this issue: The escrow idea is also unworkable for the exact same reason. The IRS doesn't care if the state sets up an escrow for you to pay in. You don't pay the IRS.

Everyone take a chill pill, Jesus.
