rereading a novel from the 50s set in the 30s and i know this passage did not hit as hard when i first read it in the 90s as it does now
Photo of a passage from "The Watch That Ends the Night"

Jerome stopped and stared at me with incandescent eyes.

"Try and understand this-the fascists have brought back tor-ture, and torture calls for martyrs. And what else is fascism but the logical product of the capitalist system?"

"What do you mean—torture calls for martyrs?"

"Simply this. Unless a man is able to stand up and look the torturer in the eye and say, 'I'm not afraid,' torture becomes the way of the world. It's as simple as that."

"Is it really as simple as that?"

"No." He shook his head impatiently. "No, because underneath it all is the plain economic exploitation of a rotten world.
The communists are the only people who understand that. How can you pretend they're not one hundred percent right when they say that at a time like this the life of a single individual isn't worth a snap of the fingers? Wasn't Debs right when he said that so long as there was a soul in prison he wasn't free?

What does a single marriage count in a balance like that? It isn't easy being me. I know what all this means. [Highlighted sentence:] This evil inside the human animal-the fascists are charming it out like a cobra out of its hole and the capitalists let them do it because they think it's good for business. You think I'm abandoning Sally by leaving for Spain. I tell you, if I don't leave for Spain then I really do abandon her to a future of fascism and concentration camps."

This is silly, but I’m now mid season 7 of Buffy, and I think a reeeeaal problem with the potentials is the first two they introduce (plus Kennedy) have extremely fake sounding British accents. It immediately signaled these weren’t going to be real characters in a way.

This is why I love Chicago so much. Their “we will fuck with you” reserves are BOTTOMLESS.

WSJ: President Trump believed his Truth Social post demanding prosecutions of James Comey and other political foes was a private message to his attorney general, and "and was surprised to learn it was public."

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

even though I had read this in WTHW some time ago, I took this pic from We Had It Coming and I keep coming back to it cuz it’s so simple but says so much. “how it actually is” “in case you need reminding” “look at what we allow” all cut to the heart of it. thx @lukeoneil47.bsky.social
I told you before that I know it can be uncomfortable to encounter an unhoused person in distress but that is because it is an up close and personal look at How It Actually Is. A peek under the hood of this country.
The churning gears and foul combustion. It's no wonder then that so many of us want these humans simply disappeared. And they are humans in case you need reminding.
They aren't a threat so much as they are an
indictment.
Look at what we allow.
It's the hideous beating of the tell-tale heart.

Anybody think it's vaguely unfair that dental assistants are always so goddamn pretty? Like the most beautiful woman on the planet just scrutinizing your flossing.

I got followed by @pattonoswalt.bsky.social and @chuckwendig.bsky.social on Twitter because of my threads about Batman and Superman, and I've become mutuals with a lot of great people involved with Star Trek.

I rewatched II recently and had to look up whether Stallone blew all his money after the first movie, because so many of those details were really well-observed. I was like, "Oh man, Stallone really knows how people who've been poor their whole lives deal with a sudden windfall- oh, wait."

Rocky II, a story about a guy who found unexpected success in the first installment, made a lot of poor financial decisions, tried to go do something else, until eventually caving to external pressures to just do it again, is basically Stallone's autobiography of deciding to make the movie.

Like, these women are so STRONG and BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING, and then some villain DESTROYS them, and they linger on that destruction, and then a normie type (a Xander, a Wash, a Giles) gets to be the one who says just the right thing to fix it. The shlubby normal guy gets to be special somehow.

I think intellectually, Whedon loves the idea of a girl who can kick ass. I think his boner's favorite moment is when the asskicking girl gets broken, when SMG's lower lip is quivering and her eyes are welling up with tears. And his ego's favorite moment is when some normal dude helps pick her up.

He's more attracted to their ability to dish out comeuppance, while Whedon lingers on the suffering, I think.

"For some, the Trump administration’s Chicago assault was a shock. But for Black Americans, none of it felt extraordinary. It felt remembered." interc.pt/4h2hBUd
