Thank you @nickdeshais.bsky.social and @seattletimes.com for covering last week’s events at Pine & 4th.

SDOT has taken a big step in the right direction. I hope they can learn from this.

Every time I go through LA’s 7th St/Metro Center station I think this is what an ST3 Westlake station should become. Very similar configuration.

They would have to dig 5th Ave very deep to add a 3rd basement level directly under the ‘wings’ but the super convenient transfers would be worth it.

Although we disagree with the conclusions from SDOT's traffic study, its traffic counts were very eye-opening:
• Over 3 times as many people use Denny Way to access areas east of I-5 than to access I-5 S
• Of the people continuing east, 35% do so in a car, 34% in a Route 8 bus, and 31% on foot

SDOT has updated their post about Denny Way bus lanes and have uploaded the full traffic study, which you can read below.

In short, it's a 516 page document that does not mention mode shift or alternate routing a single time.

To be clear, these lime bikes were not supposed to be in the bike box. The lack of official micromobilty parking here results in Lime employees just placing them where ever they feel like it. Often blocking the bike lane and sidewalks.

@csgreenways.bsky.social has been working with SDOT to fix many issues with this intersection. SDOT is listening and changes are coming, but timing and details are still being worked out.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social lime moving their bikes/scooters from the bike lane to the constrained sidewalk does not solve the problem, it just moves it somewhere else.

Please install official micromobilty parking at E Pike & Melrose in locations that do not block people’s mobility and create hazards.

SDOT likely spent $300k+ to rebuilt the status quo at E Olive Way & Bellevue Ave.

@seattledot.bsky.social are you planning any meaningful traffic calming or safety improvements here?

We’d love to see wide curb extensions to reduce crossing distances, stop bars added, and repainted crosswalks.

Another angle of the NE corner of E Olive Way & Bellevue Ave.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social I’m dumbfounded how time and money was spent to rebuild the 1920s curb geometry at E Olive Way & Bellevue Ave.

Not adding curb extensions to slow down drivers and shorten crossing is a failure, and the new wide flat curb on the NE corner is actively less safe than it was.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social please install official micromobilty parking at E Pike & Melrose Ave. This area has long needed it, and without it we constantly see bike lanes and sidewalks obstructed with bike & scooter share vehicles.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social thanks for listening to feedback and removing the awkwardly placed micromobilty parking planned for the bus island on the west side of 12th & Union! 🙏

@seattledot.bsky.social thanks for the follow-up.

Why plan and spend money on a temporary installation, when there is ample space nearby to install a permanent one instead?
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social the planned micromobilty parking on the west side of 12th & Union takes up a ton of space on the bus island, and may interfere with bus loading and unloading (particularly for ADA access).

Can you find another location nearby? The NW corner of 12th & Union has tons of space.

How would you rate this one in Montreal?

The bike path is wider and more direct, has much wider bike queuing space, and protective islands are more visible.

I also really like the yellow striping for the ped crossing of the bike lane and sharks teeth to indicate who yields.
ohtheurbanity.bsky.social
I *love* this new protected intersection. I think it’s the most exciting new bike infrastructure in Montreal since the REV Saint-Denis.

I sure hope there aren’t any major mayoral candidates planning to pause or remove cycling infrastructure. That would be awfully inconvenient right now.

Not all hero’s wear capes!

I see vehicles on the tracks at Alaskan & Wall regularly, and I’ve seen many close calls.

@seattledot.bsky.social needs to rethink the traffic patterns for cruise ship loading.

Closing Wall before the tracks and directing cruise vehicles via Broad would be an easy fix.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social Please install additional signage at 11th & Union that lets drivers know Union dead ends ahead of the intersection.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
It was only a matter of time before a driver turned onto Union between 11th & 12th not realizing it was dead end, immediately do a U-Turn, and drive out using the bike lane.

@seattledot.bsky.social please harden the bike butter here to prevent this.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social since the missing NTOR installation at 12th & Madison was scheduled with the Union bus lane work that’s now been partially suspended, can you confirm the missing NTOR will still be installed this weekend?

Thank you @theurbanist.org @seattletru.bsky.social @sngreenways.bsky.social @transpochoices.bsky.social and every volunteer and advocate fighting for better mobility, connection, and safety on our streets. This is a shared win and something to celebrate.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
@seattledot.bsky.social I’m hearing tons of concerns about the new eastbound diagonal bike crossing at 11th & Union.

It needs large curb extensions to daylight the intersection and prevent drivers cutting the corner.

A bike box in front of the setback vehicle stop bar would ensure predictable ROW.
mattbaume.bsky.social
It's an insane design. 100% invitation to conflict with turning cars and oncoming buses. Essentially putting a left-turn lane in the right-most lane. It would be so easy to implement a safer version with a bike box! Not perfect, but at least better!
streetcrafting.bsky.social
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Love the quick drawing to illustrate a potential solution!

Yeah, but only ped signals on the other side of the street, so pedestrians cross the green bike phase since they are accustomed to waiting at the curb for the light to change.

There is no way for pedestrians to know they should stay on the waterfront side of the bike lane if the signal is red.
streetcrafting.bsky.social
The same is true for peds crossing the Union bike lane, but unfortunately they aren’t signalizing that crossing.

Just look at the pedestrian crossings along the waterfront. They signaled the vehicle lane crossings, but not the bike lane crossings and has resulted in daily conflicts.
