‘Six words or _fewer_.”
A meme. There’s a skull at the top, followed by the words ‘WRITE A HORROR STORY IN SIX WORDS OR LESS’

This is not funny! 😢 I see this scenario happening soon!🤷‍♂️

Oct 3, 1946: #RosalindFranklin defended her PhD on coal chemistry. That path led to #Photo51—the image that revealed DNA’s double helix. A hidden spark that unlocked life’s blueprint.

She was an inspiration! Rest in peace!

I’m sad to hear the news that the wonderful Jane Goodall is no longer in the world. Her work with chimpanzees at Gombe in Tanzania taught us to look at other apes - and ourselves - differently. I was privileged to meet her later in life and tell her what an inspiration she was to me.

TYLENOL
We stand with science, and we stand with you.
For generations, families have trusted TYLENOL® when it matters most.
Why? Because Tylenol is one of the most studied medications in history.
The facts remain unchanged: over a decade of rigorous research, endorsed by leading medical professionals, confirm there is no credible evidence linking acetaminophen to autism.
Acetaminophen is used worldwide as a first line of defense for pain relief and fever reduction, at the recommendation of independent public health and leading medical professionals and in accordance with the product label.
High fevers and pain are widely recognized as potential risks to a pregnancy if left untreated, especially in the first trimester.
Remember to talk to your doctor.
We prioritize science as the core of how we provide care, and that will never change.

yesterday, two tourists chatting on porto pim beach #Faial #Açores
(german) tourist: "ist das kunst oder kann das weg?"
me: "art? nope! just the footwork of a molecular biologist who has spent far too long thinking about circular bacterial chromosomes... by tomorrow, tide or wind have done the job.

"Oxford becomes first UK university to offer ChatGPT Edu to all staff and students" - imagining a lot of staff there pretty upset about, but also it says much about OpenAI's education strategy that it's targeted Oxford as its first institutional capture in the UK www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-09...

Structural bioinformatics is incredibly powerful on its own or when paired with theory or experiment. One of the PDB's superpowers isn’t from one structure, but comparing many to uncover folds, binding sites, and subtle conformational shifts. chemrxiv.org/engage/chemr...
10 Rules for a Structural Bioinformatic Analysis
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is one of the richest open‑source repositories in biology, housing over 277,000 macromolecular structural models alongside much of the experimental data that underpins thes...

We’ve put the analysis pipeline and processed data out so others can reproduce or build on it. I’d love to hear what you think, especially from vets, animal geneticists, and immunologists. RTs appreciated. Thanks for reading!

What this means in practice is promising: these genes and pathways are candidates for biomarkers of disease response, targets to explore in vaccine studies, or traits to consider in selective breeding for resilience. But we still need wet-lab validation. 🔬

Pathway analysis pointed to things you don’t always expect together — necroptosis, osteoclast differentiation, oxytocin signaling, and cGMP–PKG pathways. That mix suggests links between inflammatory cell death, immune signaling, and broader physiological responses.

we found 28 robustly differentially expressed genes across datasets, and eight of those are clearly immune-related — names you might recognize include IL1A, ZBP1, TLR10, PPARG and others. These aren’t one-off hits; they recur across experiments.

Why do this? Individual RNA-seq studies are noisy and specific to one experiment. By integrating studies, we cut through that noise and highlight the molecular changes that really matter across conditions.

We combined four independent bovine transcriptome datasets, reprocessed them through the same pipeline, and then used meta-analysis to pull out genes that are consistently differentially expressed despite different tissues and study designs.

we ran a meta-analysis of multiple cattle RNA-seq studies to hunt for immune signals that keep popping up across experiments. I’m really excited about what turned up. 2/9
