lots of bike cops all over downtown already. i don't even know if this particular NoKings rally is marching

crowd is the biggest it's been in months. filling the whole square in front of the battleship oregon memorial

it's 3am and i've hijacked the grow tent venting system (that we use for our resin printer) to finish painting a flag for no kings tomorrow—p100s getting their pre-game early, maybe, hopefully not, i got enough teargas in 2020

i need to throw up sheets and have a real painting booth in the basement

maybe it's because i was a writer long before i was a programmer, but the huge gains in NLP into actually processing the meaning of words the last few years has been pretty stark

not just storing and retrieving statistically likely outcomes, but systems that seemingly work directly with meaning

there's a fun irony that dash's markdown post has several markdown parsing errors

it's a lovely little spec, but it's been an absolute shitheel to implement and standardize for decades
It’s true, I don’t know about plain text files. 🤣 lmao, the Techier Than Thou neckbeards get defensive any time you explain that the human aspects matter more than the technical ones, and retreat to trying to condescend about minutia.

pop_os (cosmic) has a fun quirk where dragging a window into another will trigger a "make this program open this other program" feature. most of the time one or both apps crash

and tbf a lot of linux distros have this quirk and to some degree i appreciate the optimism, if not the lost browser tabs

i feel like the constant confounding of nicotine and smoke is a total and complete failure of the medical science community

and it seems intentional every time a paper or web page primer elides over the unknowns by just saying "and/or combustion byproducts contribute to X"

ok? and absent that??

it's such a gloomy grey day in portland the street lights are coming on at 2pm

this is what they mean when they say pnw winters deal psychic damage instead of cold
January 8, 2026 at 10:18 PM
"if only the gestapo were better trained this wouldn't happen"
ice agents simply aren't trained well enough to be on the street. they are a genuine danger to citizens

the small victory of standing up a proxy and database server and successfully getting a login request to walk the full system path and return access/refresh tokens

the bigger victory of doing it without vibe coding it. just going through the fundamentals and actually internalizing them

i keep getting drawn into the helicopter highline strike in telegraph canyon. the highline had a notam, potentially incorrect in stating an altitude of 2800' MSL, but correctly noting 600' AGL. flight records show N3502P skimming less than 100' AGL leading up to the crash

whenever Very Bad Takes over the shapes of bodies goes around i'm reminded of "changes" by neil gaiman [let's death of the author here, so bear with me]. pills are accidentally invented that do fully reversible transitions. and everyone truly, literally, calms their tits about each other's bodies

a mildly infuriating command prompt couplet. you have to wonder what happened at microsoft / that typescript team that day that their clean and build flags are order-dependent

"inline code completion (now with machine learning)" in webstorm has got at least a 40% miss rate and that's something i can't have waiting in ambush under my tab-to-compete hotkey

i think it's kind of funny that the naysayers on the big For You thread are kind of telling on themselves or their immediate network, "why is my feed full of weird shit i'm not into??"

it feels inevitable that we'll eventually see someone try malicious requests explicitly permitted in the .claude files

i mean, widely distributed scripts or "skills" run by a closed-source program prone to hallucinations just doesn't sound safe at all

streaming services don't really implement pregap audio and it's a fucken shame

it completely takes the magic out of live albums. all the chit-chat and the noodling and the off-hand remarks, lost to negative time
December 31, 2025 at 2:50 AM
do kids these days even know about negative timestamps on CDs?

they hid whole-ass hidden tracks in the negative spaces

but also, every live song on streaming services sounds wrong without the crowds sounds and the lead-up words from the vocalist or the noodling from the band before the song starts

replacing my gpu and it finally happened, i don't have any vga or dvi slots anymore

maybe it's finally time to toss that old box of cables

a deeply misogynistic, self-involved, and self-aggrandizing project made by a petulant manchild with zero understanding or context about the world outside their incredibly narrow slice of experience...

what else would you name it but Grok?

in retrospect we should've taken the war more seriously, instead now we're seriously considering falling back and ceding the rest of September to christmas

when is enough enough?
In retrospect the Bush-era War On Christmas stuff seems more ominous than it did at the time. It was just cable news guys crying about dumb/fake shit, then and now; I mean the campaign to turn Christmas, which most everyone likes and feels warmly about, into just another thing to get mad about.

i don't think i'll ever not be mad/amused that "fleece" stopped meaning wool and now means plastic and has also somewhere along the way become a synonym for fraud
December 25, 2025 at 5:46 PM
it boggles my mind every year that peacock lane is open to car traffic

you'd think portland of all places would do better

on the plus side, the hotdog carts are a new-to-me addition that i fully endorse
