I don't think you non-science people realize what it takes to get a grant funded by NIH. Started experiments in Sept 2021 to generate 3 new mouse mutants to model human disease. Prelim dara shows they have relevant disease phenotypes worthy of study. Need a small grant first to characterize /1

Just published my review of neuroscience in 2025, on The Spike.

The 10th of these, would you believe?

This year we have foundation models, breakthroughs in using light to understand the brain, a gene therapy, and more

Enjoy!

We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it — and his memory — alive.

A thread on NIH Reorganization and the Scientific Management Review Board (SMRB)

Disclosure: I was involved with the SMRB since its inception and have very strong feelings about how it was used, misused, and abandoned. My passion on these issues will undoubtably show through.

Agree. Also one's own goal doesn't need to be the ultimate goal of a whole scientific field.
I came across a quote in an article, which I will paraphrase: the ultimate goal of neuroscience is to model the brain and derive laws that define the brain’s computational abilities. Statements like this are common and presented as self-evident, but I think they are wrong.

Tragic tale. Terrific thread.
One of the world's strangest ruined places is the American town of Centralia, in Central Pennsylvania.

Its residents were forced to leave by an underground fire that has been burning beneath the town for more than 60 years, and now the whole place stands abandoned.

It's almost always better to have experts do a job and also explain things.
Sorry to rant about this again, but there's a lot going on with Trump and his AV techs this election cycle. This time around I've also had the chance to work and converse with audio engineers who have serviced his rallies, and the truth is that he is the type of client who can cause these problems.
Trump legit had an episode on stage tonight

This graph is astonishing. The people that bang on about “natural birth” and “women have been doing this forever without help” need to be forced to stare at this until their eyes water.

The superior colliculus strikes again. Probably.
6/9 What we found was different. Instead of the fixation onset, the **saccade onset** explained most of the variance in latency and amplitude of the M100. That is, the bulk of the M100 (P100 also, as shown in a separate dataset) is NOT fixation-elicited.

NBC: What reproductive rights concessions would be on the table to get Republican votes? Religious exemptions?

I think people may be over-estimating how bad this piece is.

In the very next paragraph Klein says Trump had inhibitors around him in his first term and concludes that things will be far worse if he’s elected again. It takes awhile to get to its point but it’s not sane-washing Trump.
