I’m thrilled to have my first report with Jubilee out into the world today; I hope it’s an informative read and a helpful resource for advocating against Australian gas expansion.

"We find a strong possibility that Asian countries could increase their support for CCS through to 2050, risking a significant lock-in of unabated fossil fuels & stranded asset costs, let alone risks to the world achieving the Paris Agreement 1.5˚C warming limit"

Asian adoption of CCS could see huge emissions rise - report
Asian countries are considering CCS to address fossil fuel emissions, which could create a "considerable and unnecessary risk" not only to the Paris Agreement, but also to their own economies.

Tangguh LNG: Big project, huge risks⚠️

This #FossilGas project in West Papua has destroyed vital mangrove forests, violated local people's rights & increased emissions in a climate-vulnerable region.

Who's behind it? ⤵️

🚨New research🚨Rich countries can unlock $6.6 trillion for climate action by ending fossil fuels handouts, making polluters pay, defunding wars, taxing the super rich. There’s no shortage of $$ for action. It’s just in the wrong hands.

Since 2017, the Int'l Energy Agency has told the world the fossil fuel industry can reduce its emissions of toxic, planet-warming methane at little to no cost to itself. But industry keeps failing to clean up its act. Methane emissions are still rising in lockstep with production. bit.ly/47YXaVt
A graph showing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector rising in lockstep with production of these fossil fuels. That suggests the industry is failing to take steps to reduce methane emissions along its supply chain.

As of 28 August, heavily polluting industries had lodged 22 ICSID claims this year. Across all ISDS tribunals, nearly $114 billion overall had been awarded to investors as of December 2023. In the biggest payouts made so far, fossil fuel companies have been the main beneficiaries

🚨 OUT NOW! Our new @science.org study led by @kohrathefog.bsky.social is the first to comprehensively quantify the health impacts of and inequities in outdoor air pollution exposure across all stages of the US oil and gas lifecycle: extraction ➡️ transport/storage ➡️ refining/processing ➡️ end-use. 🧵

Japan & Korea’s corporate Gas Empire is costing Australians, essentially giving away a large proportion of gas for free. 💸 Energy prices soar 📈 while corporations pay no royalties & almost no tax. ❌ Uncover how Australia is enabling this: www.jubileeaustralia.org/resources/pu... #GasEmpire #AusPol

Mozambique LNG is a known site of environmental and human rights violations – and the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) approved billions of tax dollars to fund this project without proper environmental review, economic assessments, or public input.

We're taking them to court.

At 2pm today, we'll learn whether a group of Torres Strait Traditional Owners who sued the Australian government for negligence over its failure to meaningfully address climate change have been successful, and whether they've won.

I'll be reporting the decision for @reneweconomy.com.au.
