Cellar Dweller

My partner has that Arrow box set that has Robot Jox in it, and he wanted to go through some of the stinkers. Indeed, this was a stinker. The monster looks quite good, especially when eating flesh and bones, but all it ever does is ineffectually swipe at people.
Promo art for "Cellar Dweller"

A beast-like monster chained to a wall rips at a woman's shirt, who is helpless on the floor.

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Illustration: a portrait of Rieko Kodama with some of the games she has worked on. The dominant colors are yellow, purple and red. Counterclockwise from top left: Rieko Kodama, Alis and Lutz from Phantasy Star, Sonic in a maze, Alex Kidd and his motorbike next to Flicky on a waterfront pier, Joe Musashi and his dog near the Statue of Liberty facing a skyline, the three playable characters from Golden Axe seen from behind on the edge of a cliff, and one of the flying ships from Skies of Arcadia.

It's one of those things that's kind of interesting, but would be enhanced by accessible evidence and contextual information. The CD version of the DOS port included video files of scenes from Bakshi's film as cutscenes, and copyright information for is included in the SNES version's manual.
Copyright and trademark information from the manual to the 1994 SNES game "J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Volume 1". Text reads:
"Software and Manual Copyright 1994 Interplay Productions, Inc. All rights reserved. This program is published with the cooperation of the Tolkien Estate and the their publishers, Harper Collins Publishers. This game is based on The Lord of the Rings copyright 1954, 1955. 1966, J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings is a registered trademark, characters and names are trademarks of Tolkien Enterprises. The Lord of the Rings animations copyright The Saul Zaentz Company, 1978. All rights reserved." Screenshot of the CD-ROM version of Interplay's "J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Volume 1", featuring Gandalf holding the One Ring as featured in Ralph Bakshi's 1978 film adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings". The image is one frame of a compressed video file with a golden border and bespoke interface to pause, play, stop, and rewind.

Because I'm an American, it looks like Hotaru is driving, thereby making this image extremely powerful.

They really are, a bit of extra texture and a reminder of just how labor intensive and complicated making these shorts was. Likely photographed without a proper animation stand or lighting, at a time when simply checking the results meant sending film off and waiting days for it to be developed.

This remains one of my favorite episodes of the show, a particularly fun return to a film I have a lot of nostalgic fondness for while more seriously considering the merits of the films that comprise it!

Happy 25th anniversary to Digimon: The Movie!

We had a great time covering it as a part of our month of retro anime coverage back in 2022, taking a look at the re-edited American version along with the original Japanese constituent films! Give it a look!

Becky is one of the all-time legends -- a master of her craft, a fount of knowledge on the industry, and an incredible positive role model for us trans folk to aspire to. She's had an incredibly rough go of it these last several years, and I urge you to consider supporting her in this time of need.

It's May 2, 2000. 2am.

You fire up your USENET reader and check out what's happening on alt.fan.bgcrisis.

The top thread is about whether or not Priss would hate the Communists because it would make a really good story for someone's Duke Nukem 3D total conversion.

Time to go back to sleep.
A screenshot from the USENET newsgroup alt.fan.bgcrisis from May 2, 2000, speculating on whether or not a character from the 1980s anime series Bubblegum Crisis, Priss, would hate quote the communists unquote.

Their Dunbine shorts can be found here, as well as a pixilation focused short set to a parody of the Xabungle opening and a fun little thing featuring Kenshiro singing along to a Vifam insert song.

They also parodied the ED, this time with actual cel layers that produce some charming photography errors with light reflecting off them.
