She used Google Translate, of course, writing short sentences in English. She did not use the voice app or translate from Portuguese. She messaged me to ask what will happen when they need to speak with the caseworker.

A family member (by chance, a translator) is at the social security services this morning in Portugal. An elderly Chinese couple entered the offices. They do not speak Portuguese or English, and asked for her help.

This is yet another story of how migrants try daily to navigate linguistically and culturally discordant settings, and how technology—most importantly, the members of the host community—can make a difference.

Rachel, I know some colleagues from EMT universities use the EMT framework precisely for this. For instance, at Leiden, we ask students in different courses to reflect on their acquisition of these competences.

Thrilled to have been the opponent for Dr Bennett’s PhD defense! Her study on agents in the translation process of the Portuguese Journal of Cardiology offers insights into translators’ roles in academical medical contexts. Honored to engage in such inspiring discussions. Congratulations! 🎓✨

Uyghur is a complex language with a rich literary history. By eliminating it from schools, the party state will effectively make it a kitchen language (and that’s the best case scenario). youtu.be/CBdUK96f_EQ?...

What do you think of #subtitles?
We want to hear your opinion!

The UK #Subtitling #Audience 🎬 Survey is collecting information on #viewing habits and #perceptions of subtitled media. It should take about 10 minutes.
We would love to hear from you 😊

After a rough few weeks, it is lovely to be in Antwerp: loving the Antwerp accent, all the kriek options, and conversations about translation and interpreting. But seriously, what’s with all the Nijntje merch? Can we get more of that in Leiden, please?
