While we wait for our bannermen to amass, let's take a look at some historical knights! Today we're focusing on Usama ibn Munqidh.

Sword Cross'd is an invite only zine exploring the lives of knights in all forms! Our interest check and mod apps are running now until Feb. 16.

Background is dark blue with a repeating medieval pattern in shades of pale blue. Historical Knights. Usama ibn Munqidh: Crusades. Usama was a poet, author, diplomat or courtier, and faris (knight) during the crusades. He served as an advisor to Saladin, whose military successes are some of the most remembered from this period. Usama's writings provide a rare perspective of Islamic life during the crusades, especially in documenting his interactions with the crusaders.

Two men in armor are dueling. One man is massive and appears to be overpowering the smaller of the two, who has been forced to one knee and is just barely holding back the larger man's sword with a rapier and dagger. Their faces are very closer together.

My first completed illustration of the year is a follow up to one of my most popular illustrations (linked below). This new one is titled "Fealty." 😁
We peer through ornate curtains at a king kneeling before a man in armor who stands before him. The king gazes up at the knight and is in the process of shrugging out of his ornate robes, which trail behind him. The knight cradles the king's face in one hand, and the king has a hand on the knight's armored leg.

This piece, by a mile. 😅
A king and knight, who both clearly yearn for each other, have found a private moment together. Both are in full regalia and armor, as though they'd only been able to step away for this one brief moment. The king leans in to kiss the knight, and the knight draws him closer despite making a half-hearted attempt to keep up the appearance of being on duty.
