Taking apart my mother's old 8-track cassette deck today for repairs. It's still amazing how much bigger electronic circuits used to be.
An 8-track cassette mechanism removed from and sitting on top of its laminate wooden housing. Lots of large metal parts and small bundles of insulated wires connecting different parts of the device. Close up of the main circuit board. Not a single surface-mount device to be found. Lots of large electrolytic capacitors, resistors, etc. The reverse side of the main circuit board. The traces are large and shiny, and much of it was likely made or assembled by hand.

This is how awful it looked a month ago when I was beginning the process of rebuilding everything. My little computer corner has been hell. I'm so ready to clean!
Photo of the room containing the aforementioned network closet, but prior to all the work. There was only one shelf and one server, the closet was full of junk and completely unorganized. Boxes containing computer parts are scattered around the computer desk and chair in the corner of the room, and the whole place looks like some kind of disaster is in progress.

Picture of my network closet, with a fresh coat of light gray paint and with new unfinished wood shelves installed. If you ignore a couple of stray cables that I can't replace yet and couldn't remake myself, it looks good as hell. The internet routers and a 16-port switch are on the top shelf, the compute and storage servers are on the bottom shelf, and a bundle of cables connecting both servers to the switch and WAN are draped down from the top shelf, and neatly wrapped with Velcro.

I use these neodymium magnets to find drywall screws, and just noticed the example "project" "idea" on their packaging

I was only going to take down these large brackets, lower them, and put smaller brackets in their original location. But now I'm repainting the whole mfn closet.

All three shelf brackets did this. I was being so gentle, too.

They also have bills to pay and kids to raise. I don't assume you're stealing food from the supermarket so that you can eat... @luminousflux: i have literally had to shoplift to feed myself before. i haven't had to do that since getting a college degree, in part thanks to libgen.
