Do I need a button up button, to keep things neat and tidy and buttoned up? Or perhaps a button down button to always be prepared and well buttoned down for disasters? No, I think, a button your lip button for supporters of the badministration.

“I’ll take a gross, please!”

The village buzzes with life when the Button Merchant arrives. Everyone wants to buy a shiny brass button for their son's coming of age; a diamond one for an engagement; an indigo one to complete the rainbow down their shirt. What sort of button do you seek?

My family is the only one to wear abalone shell. The buttons are cool and smooth under my thumb as I fasten my little son's thick sealskin coat.

He has never seen the sea. He does not know what I miss. But someday, someday he will feel cold waves kiss his skin, as I did.

At first, I just wanted any ole button from far away. Dreaming of places beyond our walls, charmed by designs and words I didn't recognize.

Then I found words I did recognize, etched onto undersides.

Now I hoard certain buttons, eager to put them in order, and hand my own back.

The seller winks.

What button do you get for a day of grief? Today is the day my father passed into shadow and I want something to hold, to remember and — sometimes — to forget.

Battered suitcase in hand, I decline the android's help as I go down the stairs slowly. I say goodbye to the mushroom vendor on floor 215, I listen to the baker's news on floor 199, I sing with the choir at the church on floor 155, I fish in the pond on floor 73. I'm finally moving to the forest.

In your city the towers never stop rising. New construction is always happening, stacking more units one atop the other like the teetering ice cream scoops of an over-eager child. Whose homes and businesses do you pass through each morning on your way to the ground?

The city must eat. It is what my mother and father taught me. There has never been famine since we learned to listen.

At the top, sunflowers, wheat. Pumpkin and strawberry shoots trail from windows, by waterfalls. In the cool, dark soil, potatoes, yellow, purple, orange.

Every plant, a memory.

The tide was harsh today, a whole tower crumbled to nothing but a heap of sand.

If we don't shore up the base, City Hall will be next.

The moment the water recedes, we clamber down the wreckage, laying shovels down to use as slides, wedging a pail into a cracking foundation.

We rebuild, as ever.

The Ground. Fabled. Legendary. Mythical? Five solar cycles on my quest to find it. The way out is through. The way through is Down. Not every Stair is usable, so Up nearly as often. Through Parks, and Passages. Business Centers and Hydroponic Farms. Dorms, to sleep. The Ground calls. Down is out!

I secure my parachute as I head away from the main shaft, so busy this time of day it take ages to jump, to the skywalk that bridges the buildings. I venture five buildings west--to the Morely Estate. Their grand mansion touches the clouds and also has a right of way shaft. 1/

In an effort of conservationism, I taught the local corvids to play poker. Conservationism? you ask.

Yes. Because I taught them to use bottle caps instead of chips. There is now not a single cap littering a ten mile square area. And I don't have to throw mine away, I just make sure to lose.

Thanks to your neighbour teaching them soccer last year, a murder of crows has formed a soccer league that meets weekly up on the hill. A nearby unkindness of ravens plays bocce. What sport do you teach your local corvids?

Ping-pong.

I know, I know, I know. The most regrettable of all regrettable ideas.

But you don't know happiness until it's a 5v1 crows against human ping-pong battle for the first piece of glorious plate-sized peanut brittle from Granny Maddy's.

My stomach still hurts from laughing. And I lost.

"We could start our own team" I suggest to the magpies eating rotten apples under my tree

"Whatever for?" their leader slurs her words

"Both the crows and the ravens are doing it"

"We'd rather throw seeds at the silly birds when they fail to score" the magpies trip over each other, laughing at me

"I'm not sure they listened past the name, to be honest."

My neighbor and I watch the big, dark birds careering all over the lawn, all chasing down a single, bounding, chirruping grasshopper.

"You mean...?"

"Yeah, cricket."

I set it all up at dawn. The crows and ravens have their own games, but their cousins, the Scrub Jays, haven't figured out what to play. With twigs, chalk, peanuts and sunflower seeds, I put together a decent-looking bird baseball diamond.

The Jays flew in, ate everything, then flew away.

I can tell she's at her wit's end the moment she opens the door. Beautiful honey-gold hair frizzy, eyes puffy and red.

Her baby is not crying, but giving me a warning look. It's strange, I agree, a childless, sleepless mage offering this comfort.

I hum low and rock the cradle with my foot.

Some quests are grand, involving a lot of swords and wyrms and magical grandmothers and attracting all sorts of media attention. Other quests are quiet and relatively unnoticed; rewilding a field or mastering the art of sourdough. What quest do you face today?

Who wouldn’t be thrilled to go sparkle-picking in the coruscorchards?
My daughter could barely sleep last night for the thought of it.

Am I excited to chaperone her class of proto-witchlings, keeping them away from the nether swamp, shoving sandwiches at them and tending to scorched fingers?

Yes!

The dam cracked and the river threatened to flood our valley. I woke up a tired wizard with freshly baked fresh rolls so he'd handle the crisis. I distracted the pixies with honey treats so their tears would not affect the weather. Being a successful undercover guardian requires a lot of baking.

Today, my quest is to fight my most fearsome foe; myself.

I've worked hard, every day for weeks, and it's time to rest. Its difficult, I feel as if I should be working on something, doing *anything*, to help combat the rising evil, but I can't help anyone if I'm too worn out.

So tea, & rest.

It's wash day.

I've taken my hair down. I divide a section two inches wide, and nimble fingers hit a snarl. I press it in my fingers. It's the afternoon I thought that something in me is broken and that's why I can't write.

I work it loose, gently - goodbye - and then my fingers find another.
