the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it's called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don't care, but because you care too much.

you don't need lower standards. you need less self-worth tangled up in your goals. the work gets easier when it's not about proving who you are.

My family is the only one to wear abalone shell. The buttons are cool and smooth under my thumb as I fasten my little son's thick sealskin coat.

Whilst I concede that texting is “convenient”, I much prefer all correspondence to be in the form of a handwritten letter composed on an oak desk by candlelight with a quill dipped into a bottle of ink, enclosed in an envelope with a wax seal, and sent via raven.

Sometimes writing is like making a quilt.

You find a perfectly good story-thing, rip it apart into a thousand tiny, frayed little pieces, and cheerfully stitch them together again, one painstaking stab at a time.
