And yes, I will always refer to it as The Sphere because the actual name is far stupider.

Okay, that's unfair, there were practical reasons the original ideas in The Wizard of Oz couldn't be filmed at the time, so there is a valid argument to saying "we did what they would've if they could've".

"But Bluetooth audio is so much better now!" Yes, and it costs more power, has a lower range, and still isn't actually as good as a wired connection in almost all cases. So you get things running hotter, not lasting as long both in battery life and device life, and it still doesn't catch up..

How much longer before the majority of people don't remember that portable audio used to be cheap, fast, and easy to use. How much longer before it isn't even a "strange option" to have better audio.

Obviously, a higher quality wireless earbud does have to actually cost more, as much as maybe $1 each for top of the line stuff. But then you can price it for $100+. Because no one actually understands how much these things cost.

Earbuds cost like $0.02 per pair to make. Wireless earbuds cost like $0.08 per pair to make. People will pay $30+ for wireless, but only around $20 for wired. In fact, as a result of fucking us over in this way, people are less willing to pay for wired. But people still think wireless costs more.

No single decision in tech history that I know of so negatively affects me so often so obviously. Nothing else taunts me every day with painful experiences.

Every day, I have to worry about charge, every day, connections fail or to the wrong thing, or turn themselves on or off when not instructed to. The worst thing about headphones used to be rare cable tangling. Now it's expensive, slow, low quality, time-limited, inconsistent, sometimes incompatible.
December 5, 2025 at 5:06 PM
maybe I wouldn't lose minutes to painful annoyance and connection failures every single day.

The only thing worse than Bluetooth is removal of headphone jacks, which is only bad because I shouldn't have to manage yet another set of fucking batteries and because it limits connectivity to Bluetooth. If Bluetooth wasn't so bad,

and connected itself even though I'd ensured it can't automatically connect to THIS computer anymore. And because it was in a backpack I use, random keys were being pressed and held down at different times.

Bluetooth is the single most consistently bad technology in my experience.

"But I shouldn't be paying unless I'm using it." You are using it. Just because you aren't sending a thing yourself doesn't mean you aren't massively benefiting from the system existing. Every other service costs more and doesn't deliver to as many places, and charges more per item sent.
