The early history of the codex and its increasing prominence in antiquity over against the scroll have frequently been tied by modern scholarship to its use in early Christianity and the spread of that religion throughout the Mediterranean. This led to reciprocal influence between academic work on ancient Christian book culture, on the one hand, and work on papyrology and early codicology, on the other. Some assumptions underlying this enterprise, however, are at best dubious. Hypotheses of a Christian preference for the codex and of a link between this ostensible preference and writings ancient Christians regarded as “scripture” are highly methodologically problematic. Indeed, a fundamental rethinking of the early Christian book is required, one that incorporates all relevant literary and manuscript evidence.
