Just a reminder! If you're buying books in support of #BannedBooksWeek buying from Amazon undercuts the broader project of social justice supporting the right to read is a part of. Get your banned books absolutely anywhere else!
Amazon is the invisible backbone of ICE’s immigration crackdown
Lobbying dollars and a cozy relationship with the government have given the tech giant an outsize influence in the Department of Homeland Security.

Bill Jenrick (father) LinkedIn:

"I served a 5 year apprenticeship at AEI Manchester and qualified as a Management accountant. Then I worked as an accountant...."

Robert Jenrick (son) : "...gas fitters like my dad"

I know plenty of politicians 'working classify' their backgrounds, but this from Jenrick is taking the piss.

His father's linked in is here: uk.linkedin.com/in/bill-jenr...

He was a managing accountant who ended up as the Managing Director of Cannon Industries

Claire Hanna’s leader’s speech to the #SDLP conference was far-sighted, but was anyone listening? My take in today’s @irishnews.com online and in the shops.

Jenrick was speaking from Aldridge, Brownhills an area that has upto 90% of white British residents. This makes it less mixed than the UK average and therefore little chance of social integration because of low diversity. But Jenrick didn’t see that. Is that racist?

Just heard Chris Philp on BBC’s Today programme explaining why the Tories want to leave the ECHR. He claimed ECHR isn’t mentioned in Belfast Agreement - which is simply untrue. The UK govt agreed to incorporate it into NI law & give direct access to the courts (Strand 3). Why no BBC fact-check?

This article manages to name her husband before it names… her.
Article reads:
Woman named as Archbishop of Canterbury in historic first

The 63-year-old archbishop-designate is married to Eamonn Mullally, with whom she has two children. Originally from Woking in Surrey, she was the UK's chief nursing officer from 1999 to 2004.

@govpritzker.illinois.gov is not just serving a #CupOfJoe to the people of Illinois, but to every state. Get out your phones & record what ICE is doing! If the government won't hold them accountable, We the People will.

Really good piece this from @stephenkb.bsky.social. Hilariously brutal on the “What did we learn on our summer holidays?”memo. "The title sounds like it was written by an eight-year-old, which would surely have been preferable to the actual content."

I don't think Labour's policy agenda is a winning one, but combining some quite traditional leftwing economics with, essentially, not being willing to talk about how you are leftwing feels like the worst *possible* way to govern and campaign:
Memo for Labour: globalisation is good, actually
This government is in many ways the party returned to its factory settings. But the product was faulty in the first place

“After the second world war, the debt-to-GDP ratio was close to 250% – more than double what it is now. But Clement Attlee’s government chose massive public investment, created the NHS and rebuilt the country. Even in the 1950s, public investment as a share of national income stood at 7.3%.”

Ahead of his leader’s speech to the #Labour conference today I look at Keir #Starmer - a liability for his party but also his country in today’s @irishnews.com. Available online and in the shops.

In this week's episode of the Irish History Boys, Tim McGarry and I discuss how, 100 years ago, people in Clones hoped and believed large parts of Fermanagh would be transferred to the Free State. youtu.be/-Ben_zgmp9M?...
