A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

people who complain about those of us who are anti-climate doom fail to ever mention that we have been trying their approach for decades and we have lost

people cannot be scared into change. the proof that it doesn’t work is that it fucking hasn’t

Canvas just became one of the most powerful surveillance, IP theft, & data monetization tools in the world.

OpenAI bought a user-base locked in to long-term contracts.

But they can’t make us use their trashware.

Boycott. Luddify. Open source.

Don’t let them have your work or your students.

Wondering whether, on unionized campuses like mine, offloading grading to the LMS/LLM could constitute faculty breach of contract? Even tho admin pushes this slop, I fear usage could be weaponized against faculty. Yet another reason I’m pushing for an ethical tech policy in my senate work next yr

“…faculty members will be able to click an icon that connects them with various AI features…, like a grading tool, a discussion-post summarizer… Canvas’s parent company, Instructure, is also in partnership w/ OpenAI… so instructors can use generative-AI technology as part of their assignments.”
Instructors Will Now See AI Throughout a Widely Used Course Software
New features integrated into Canvas include a grading assistant, a discussion-post summarizer, and even a way to pair assignments with generative AI tools.

Friday was my last day at WIRED. Today I started a new job at Bloomberg on a dream desk with @suryamattu.com and @jeffykao.bsky.social.

Got a tip? A dataset? Something we should look at? Find me on Signal at dmehro.89

In no particular order, here’s some stuff I’d like to continue to dig in to:

Something monstrous about seeing more and more news confirming intentional deliberate starvation in Gaza and still see people center themselves by saying it makes them ‘uncomfortable’ to acknowledge that this is what it is

Whenever someone gets mad at me for questioning the net usefulness of AI and says something like “you’re like the people who didn’t want to use the internet”—with love, I was born in 1997, and my life growing up online is all the evidence I need that we should handle AI differently than we are now

There is an all-out global assault on the idea that government should help ppl & that ppl should help one another.

That's what ZM represents.

Elites of both parties in the US are engaged in this assault. Their goal: turn "the masses" against each other & prevent them from expecting better of gov.

I’ll be real honest, folks. I do not get the meltdown about Mamdani. Like, I get possibly arguing he’s a lightweight but all I see is a massive, over the top, complete crash out about him. I mean, it’s racism, I get that, I know, but it’s like politicians and journalists contracted the rage virus.
