Huge respect to OP for actually writing this. It feels like there is potential, and we could make it perform as well as the C implementation (with some tweaking)

I really enjoy editing photos with darktable. To the point where I'm considering building a Linux PC just for photo editing. Darktable's UI is kind of spotty, and part of me thinks is because of running a gtk app on macOS
