I really wanted to have a fleshed out magic system when I was younger, but I've since realized that magic really just needs to do what's good for the story. Unless you're secretly trying to trick people into learning math and science, it's *really* not worth the headache

Magic systems
Do you design them? Not believe in explaining them? Present them in an appendix? Organically throw them together as you worldbuild? Let readers work it out from context?
I am the latter, definitely don't structure them in a rule-based way.
