I most certainly don't feel alienated, in fact a proper ban can't come soon enough. These people bully landowners who want no part in their cruel "sport" & they harass anyone walking in their path. They are the true vermin of the countryside.

Naturally, if you wish to be a pedant's pedant, you can point out they the shortest day of the year, by some margin, is the last Sunday in March. (In the UK)
A fact that didn’t make it into “About Time”: we could avoid confusing children and some adults by telling them today is the shortest day when they have also been told every day is 24 hours long by using the little-known word for a complete 24 hour day-night cycle, “nychthemeron”.

It's not just the loss of foreign language fluency but access to the richness of other literatures. I read everything from Mediaeval French in the original to modern at #UCL and stayed on for a fully funded PhD. I loved it. So sad.

Almost certainly the best thing I was ever told about owls was when I met an owl handler at an owl sanctuary and he told me that the wild owls who lived near the sanctuary worried about the tame show owls there and sometimes stopped by to leave them shrews and mice as presents.

I watched Robin, Robin - the latest Aardman animation on iPlayer. Gillian Anderson is excellent as the voice of the cat. Like a feline Kaa the snake (Jungle Book). Very sultry.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
