Always loved Maynard Dixon's desert landscape paintings. These two are from the Blanton Art Museum at U of Texas.
A square painting from 1940 showing a desert mountain range in the rear with a flat plain in front. It is the middle of the day but no sun is visible. We see shadows. The colors are soft and muted. The painting feels warm. The top third of the painting shows a blue sky with thin streaks of white clouds. The middle third shows a brown mountain range with the various folds and crinkles in stark relief from the sun. The bottom third is a flat landscape. In the distance near the base of the mountain we see a flat olive color which turns into orange as it comes closer to us. About halfway towards us the streaks of color turn into bushes and they take on different tones. The desert sand appears. At the bottom of the painting is a small squiggly narrow ravine that appears to be perhaps several feet high carved into the sand. Appears like the remants of a rivulet or flash flood. At the bottom right corner, the artist has signed it: MAYNARD DIXON. It is difficult to read the rest of the writing, but it appears to say © 1940. Overall the painting is serene and nature is calm. This is a painting from 1933 of Zion National Park. It is a vertical rectangular canvas. It is dominated by a large stone edifice that appears to be the edge of a mountain or cliff. It stretches off the canvas on all sides except at the very bottom where we see small trees. Although they are relatively small in the painting, the trees appear to be large, but in relation to the huge cliff, the scale helps us understand that this is a massive geological feature. The colors are muted and warm. It is semi-realistic, but evokes emotion more than photorealism. It is daytime. A tiny glimpse of the sky is visible in the top right corner of the canvas. The stone shape is covered in light and shadow. The artist created rough areas with paint strokes that suggest ancient wear. The color changes from lighter oranges to medium gray at various spots indicating different shapes and stone composition. At the bottom left corner, we see the artist signature that reads the initials M D and the rest of the writing mostly appears to say Zion Park Aug. 1933.

Allison died in 1887 from a broken neck suffered from a fall off a wagon, an anticlimactic end for a man known for his violent and unpredictable life. Allison is buried in Pecos Texas behind the old Saloon turned Museum, where you can visit his grave and read a little story about him.

I had the chance this summer to visit the 6th Floor Museum in Dallas. It struck me that much of what has happened since November 22, 1963 is a result of that fateful moment. I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say the world lost its innocence and began to see conspiracies in every event.

During the Mexican/American War, James Benton was posted to San Antonio at the war's end to serve as inspector of arsenals at the ordnance depot there. He was a graduate of West Point and a specialist in the design and testing of small-scale artillery equipment, Benton was also trained as a topographical draftsman. He applied his drawing skills to recording the scenery in and around San Antonio during the three years he was stationed there. He was a sensitive observer and possessed an artist's eye, for his drawings are more than just reportorial vignettes: they are poetic studies of the romance of San Antonio evoked by its old Spanish architecture and its mix of ethnically diverse people. He did numerous sketches of Texas views produced in collaboration with a New Orleans artist, Charles L. Smith. The resulting panorama was exhibited in New Orleans in 1852. It was described as featuring views of the missions around San Antonio, views perhaps derived from Benton's drawings. The unwieldy panorama painting did not survive, so the precise role that Benton's drawings played in its conception are unknown, but the variety of images that he produced of people and places in San Antonio would have been essential to lending accurate details and local color to any scene. Benton left San Antonio in 1852, but his duties as arsenal inspector took him to places throughout the American South, and he continued to make drawings of the people and picturesque sites he encountered.
