Instead of treating federal workers or lower-income families as statistics, let’s create mechanisms for their unique, singular perspectives to genuinely inform policy. Imagine if federal budget negotiations were required to include deliberations with a randomly selected assembly of affected workers?

What if a portion of all federal spending was allocated through participatory budgeting processes at the local level? What if sports leagues created independent integrity commissions with real power and participation from players, coaches, and fans?

Our current challenges show the limits of our existing political and economic toolkits. We need to experiment with new approaches. What if communities negotiated legally binding benefit agreements with tech companies to ensure AI development serves local needs?
