At the Broadview ICE detention center outside Chicago this afternoon, things are (relatively) calm.

A vet-organized protest is planned for 4-6pm. After 6, curfew is in place.

Masked agents enter the building. ~1 month ago we would've been able to photograph them from Beach St, but not anymore.

I think if you work for ICE you are probably not going to see heaven, but there is still time for redemption if you start breaking computers and amassing evidence to prosecute your coworkers en masse. Betraying your coworkers is, in fact, the least evil thing you could do now.

People acting like this is some kind of strategic blunder… it’s the admission of someone who thinks he and his ilk now have power and that there is no level to remove them from power. These people no longer care who knows that there’re Nazis.

Ellis says she thinks "the compromise position here" is for agents to have alphanumeric IDs that don't necessarily display their names.

"What I don't want to hear is that the officers thought there was some risk and put tape over the numbers so they can't be identified," she says.

She says she's willing to give some leeway to "undercover" officers, but says other agents, including those doing crowd control at protests, need to have ID that "identifies them numerically and by agency."

Plaintiff attys bring up a journalist shouting "don't shoot," rather than shouting protest chants.

Govt. atty brings up the issue of presence.

"From our point of view, being at a protest can be construed" as protest activity, he says.

Oh geez. In my experience, crowds of protesters, neighbors, & regular people are great moving out of the way and making room for someone needing medical attention; rarely do they need to be forced esp by police. It’s often officers and agents who refuse to budge and make things more difficult.
