The question isn’t one of #parentalrights. The question is when it comes to #intersex children are we going to error on the side of caution or on the side of policies that force irreversible, potentially destructive surgeries with life long consequences? #lgbt #childrights

people really don't like to hear that circumcision without consent is fucked up AND YET it seems obvious that cutting part of a person off without asking is wrong 🤷‍♀️

To call unnecessary #intersex surgeries an injustice fails to express the immensity of having that kind of violence inflicted on ur body. To feel forever marked, sculpted by someone else’s projected definitions,& values for ur body. Judgements like physical scars you cant escape

When it comes to #intersex surgeries there is often a baffling cultural bias built into studies- which are often hyper focused on improved surgical methods & almost zero critical discussion on if these surgeries are providing real benefit or purpose.

Explaining #intersex people to a 5 year old is easy. Explaining intersex to 30 year old who has constructed complicated cultural views on gender & sex. That gets complicated.

It’s better to think of #intersex as a catch all for the biological complexity of people that fall outside what is considered typical. Which often leads to unnecessary surgeries, imposed sense of shame in childhood or just generalized poor medical care through life.
