You come to me, on the day of my daughter's wedding...
Tuxedo cat ominously sat on a chair at a table

I was waiting for the mention of journalists, ngl

You're not that much older than me tho?
thatsoph.bsky.social
Yeah that's my thinking. Leave it and it'll recover. Still worrying generally.
thatsoph.bsky.social
Seriously considering taking my 401(k) out but then a part of me thinks it'll be just 2-3 years of pain... eek

The big tech companies are very entangled with AI companies. If that sector collapses, so many other things would be impacted. Plus they make up a huge % of the global market now, so anyone with pensions will be exposed in some way. That's my understanding anyway.
thatsoph.bsky.social
Ok so all this being true, what can I - someone who is exposed to the US market in multiple ways - actually do? I wish this sort of thing came with advice for what people should do in different circumstances...ie if you're close to withdrawing pensions etc

Bloomberg research found wholesale electricity up ~270% in areas near data centers

It doesn't seem like nearly enough people are taking it seriously

One A.I. image isn't too much energy, but 5 million videos? Per day/hour/minute whatever. It's not sustainable

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

Dolly Parton’s sister, Freida Parton, is asking for people to pray for her sister’s health.
Verified Facebook post by Freida Parton. The caption reads:

“Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly. Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been lead to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me. She’s strong, she’s loved, and with all the prayers being lifted for her, I know in my heart she’s going to be just fine. Godspeed, my sissy Dolly. We all love you! ❤️”

Below the caption is a photo of Dolly Parton standing outdoors in front of lush green ivy, hands clasped in prayer, wearing a shiny silver outfit with lace-trimmed sleeves, her signature blonde hair styled in soft curls, looking upward serenely.

It was like "what's your favourite film?"
Me: Donnie Darko I guess?
A: ooh I would have to say it's probably Three Colours Blue, the way the despair really comes through...
B: I really appreciate how Themroc is a commentary on how the working class could rise up to the proletariat...

I studied film for a foundation degree and I met sooooo many of these people

I'm already overwhelmed with the stuff I have to see, and my own algorithms etc. I try to build in time for peace and rest where I'm not glued to stuff but this is ruining it. Even knowing I have 20+ messages waiting for me stresses me out
thatsoph.bsky.social
Yes that's exactly it..when she started doing it I watched them and I'd respond thinking it was like a start of a conversation. But it's not.. she's just basically sending her Instagram algorithm to me
thatsoph.bsky.social
Only good thing about this is it's optional - wonder how many people would actively want that over what is already a good recommendation algorithm.
thatsoph.bsky.social
I have told her before that the volume is too much and I can't deal with it and she was like "would you rather I not talk to you then" and I said honestly yes actually but that was obviously the wrong answer

Perfect, 10/10 no notes

I think part of the reason I hate it is the unpredictability. I don't know what I'm about to watch and then it's something awful I don't want to watch. I LITERALLY WORK IN NEWS. I AM MORE AWARE HOW AWFUL THE WORLD IS THAN MOST PEOPLE. I don't need to see that shit in my free time.

There's no theme, it's not like it's all videos of cats or something. It's cats then random facts about stingrays then oh no a ride broke and killed several people then a sad dog rescue video then something narrated by David Attenborough
thatsoph.bsky.social
My sister communicates with me solely through the medium of Instagram videos, like 10-15 a day, but no actual conversation, and I find it so overwhelming I can't look at Instagram anymore

At least we've moved past captain Tom

Though honestly you'd forgive people in the future for thinking he was some kind of British deity for a very specific time period

I've never seen the films but this weird obsession with the fake bear is super bizarre and I also wish they'd leave the Queen out of it
