This week is fall break. The problem with fall break is the over consumption of hot coffee. When at work with students only room temperature coffee is drunk. There is also the added relaxation of reseeding the lawn and the 27 school tee shirts for the next month of teaching. Ah, fall break.

We moved into our fifth house and it’s our first not new house. It’s a 1995 fixer upper. So far it has new paint and a radon mitigation system. Bill is now fixing the stair leading to the second floor. Every weekend I’m cutting out more and more rose bushes. If only the kids could lend a hand!

Today a former student came by to say goodbye. Her family is moving back to Columbia because they don’t have papers. This smart hardworking girl will lose her education and safety. This sucks.

Two things happened today. Charlie Kirk was killed talking about gun violence and school shootings. A school shooting happened in Evergreen, Colorado. Both of these things could have prevented by gun control.

First world problem: I spilled grey paint (a color I love) onto our baby poop brown deck that I hate (the deck and the color are both awful). Do I love the tiny spill droplets or do they bother me because I can see them and they aren’t the same color? Can I rip out the deck and put in a patio now?

That’s how fascism creeps in: by normalizing fear, making classrooms feel like prisons, and putting children in danger.

The good news about being home on a Friday is watching my dogs chase the squirrels along the fence, drink coffee in my backyard, and do chores whenever I feel like it. I’m trying to think of a downside.
